The ship voyages initiated by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality İZDENİZ General Directorate to the town of Plomari in Lesvos strengthened the friendship between the two sides of the Aegean. Warming relations were also reflected in the opening of Plomari's new port. The ceremony was held with the participation of the Izmir delegation headed by the Deputy Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Mustafa Özuslu.

Ship voyages between Izmir and Greece, which had been suspended for years due to the effect of the pandemic, were restarted by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality İZDENİZ General Directorate. İhsan Alyanak cruise ship departs from Alsancak Port every Friday morning since 17 June and takes its passengers to Plomari Port of Lesvos. The ship also returns on Sunday evenings.

The warming relations between the two sides of the Aegean were also reflected in the opening ceremony of the new port of Plomari. The Izmir delegation headed by the Deputy Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mustafa Özuslu attended the ceremony, in which the 2nd Speaker of the Greek Parliament and the Deputy of Lesbos Haralambos Athanasiou, as well as the Greek Deputy Ministers of Maritime and Civil Defense and deputies were present.

Making a speech at the ceremony, Özuslu emphasized that sea voyages strengthen the friendship ties between the Turkish and Greek peoples and increase the cultural, social and economic relations between the two sides. Stating that Plomari Port is also very important in this sense, Özuslu emphasized the importance of making ship tours from Lesbos to İzmir, saying:

Midilli-İzmir joint destination

“Tourists also come to Lesbos from other European cities. It will be beneficial for all of us to organize tours from Lesbos to Izmir for both Lesbos residents and tourists, and turn the two sides into a common tourism destination. Thanks to the Greek hospitality, we felt at home here. No one should doubt that our Greek friends will experience the same feelings in Izmir. Let's strengthen friendship, good neighborliness, peace, tranquility and trade so that we can establish a much more prosperous life together in the Aegean.”

Haralambos Athanasiou, the 2nd Speaker of the Greek Parliament and Deputy of Lesbos, stated that he agreed with Özuslu's wishes and thanked the Turkish delegation for their participation. After Özuslu and Athanasiou presented gifts to each other, the new Plomari Port was opened.
