New 'Section50' Delivery to Reis Class Submarines from STM

New Section Delivery from STM to Reis Class Submarines
New 'Section50' Delivery to Reis Class Submarines from STM

The new deliveries of “Section 50”, the head section containing submarine torpedo tubes, produced for the first time in Turkey with national means under the engineering and coordination of STM, were made to the Turkish Naval Forces Command. Two “Section50s” produced for Reis Class submarines will be integrated into TCG AYDINREİS and TCG SEYDİALIREİS.

Another important delivery has been completed in the New Type Submarine Project (YTDP) initiated by the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) for the Turkish Naval Forces Command, one of the most active navies in the world. New deliveries of the "Section 50", the head section containing submarine torpedo tubes (main weapons), which only a limited number of countries in the world can produce, continue.

The second and third deliveries of “Section50”, produced for the first time in Turkey with domestic and national resources, under the engineering and coordination of STM, at Gürdesan Gemi Makinaları Sanayii Ticaret A.Ş. 2 “Section 50” produced for Reis Class submarines were delivered to Gölcük Shipyard Command by sea. The second and third Section 50 sections produced and delivered in Turkey will be integrated into TCG AYDINREİS and TCG SEYDİ ALİREİS. STM and Gürdesan delivered the first Section 50 to be integrated into TCG MURATREİS in September 2021.

Demir: We will continue to localize critical systems

President of the Turkish Presidency of Defense Industry Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir announced the development on his social media account with the following statements:

“We continue to localize critical systems. We made the new deliveries of 'Section 50', the head section of which the submarine torpedo tubes are located, to Gölcük Shipyard Command. 2 pieces of Section 50, AYDINREİS and SEYDİ ALIREİS, will be integrated into our submarines.”

Smiling: We Exceeded Our Targeted Locality Rate

STM General Manager Özgür Güleryüz stated that the localization of the submarine torpedo section is a historical success and said, “In this context, as STM, we completed and delivered our first Section50 production last year. We transferred the second and third productions to Gölcük Shipyard Command. We aim to deliver our fourth Section 50 section, which we continue to produce for the last submarine of our project, by the end of 2022. Although it is the first time that this level of production is being carried out, all deliveries were made on time, without disrupting the project, with the knowledge, experience and superior effort of STM engineers. We are also proud that we have succeeded in exceeding the targeted localization rate for Reis Class Submarines, which will increase the deterrence of our Navy in the Blue Homeland. I congratulate all my teammates and stakeholders who contributed to this project, which is an important experience gain on the way to national submarine production.”

Another Section 1 will be delivered this year.

The second Section 50, which was produced and delivered under the coordination of STM, the first engineering company with submarine construction and modernization capability in Turkey and to be integrated into TCG AYDINREİS, was delivered fully equipped. The third Section 50 section, which has been mechanically processed and ready to be equipped, will be equipped at Gölcük Shipyard Command. The fourth Section 50, which is still in production, is scheduled to be delivered by November 2022.

It will fire 8 guided missiles

Section 50, the most critical part of the Reis class submarines, the last modern submarine platform of the Turkish Navy, contains submarine main weapons and systems that enable the firing of guided missiles. Thanks to the Section 50 produced, Reis Class Submarines are armed with 8 533mm torpedo tubes. Within the scope of the project, it is planned to deliver 6 Reis Class Submarines. The section containing the torpedo tubes of the first two submarines was produced by the German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), the main contractor of the project. The Section 3 section, which will be located in the 4rd, 5th, 6th and 50th submarines, is being produced in Gürdesan for the first time in Turkey under the main subcontractor of STM.

STM plays a critical role in Reis Class Submarines

STM plays an important role in the production of Reis Class Submarines. Revealing its design competence and experience in submarine for YTDP, STM, within the scope of Section 50; provides all the coordination of the project. Making the construction plans, checking the assembly, making them ready for delivery and following the delivery stages are carried out by the expert teams of STM. Apart from Section 50, in STM, YTDP; carries out design, engineering and system integration activities. Contributing to the localization of the materials, devices/systems to be used in shipbuilding, STM has the domestically manufactured non-submarine resistant boat blocks and some GRP units (Submarine Composite Superstructure) to increase the domestic contribution in the project.

New Type Submarine Project

Within the scope of the needs of the Naval Forces Command, 6 Reis Class submarines are aimed to be built with the maximum participation of Turkish industry at Gölcük Shipyard Command in order to meet the criteria of the Submarine Operations Concept. Within the scope of the New Type Submarine Project, it is planned to put 6 submarines into service until 2027, equipped with an air-independent propulsion system, capable of launching many types of torpedoes, missiles and laying mines, and equipped with weapons against underwater, surface and land targets. Equipped with the Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP), Reis Class submarines will have the opportunity to operate underwater for weeks without coming to the surface. Submarines with low-noise navigation capability will be able to operate in secrecy for a long time. The submarines will have a length of 68 meters, a weight of over 2 thousand tons and a capacity of 40 personnel. The first submarine TCG PİRİREİS, built in Gölcük Shipyard as part of the project, was launched in March 2021. In the project, HIZIRREİS Submarine Towing and SELMANREİS Submarine First Welding Ceremony was held on May 23, 2022 with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The names of the Reis Class Submarines that will serve in the Turkish Naval Forces Command are as follows:

TCG PİRİREİS, TCG HIZIRREİS, TCG MURATREİS, TCG AYDINREİS, TCG SEYDİALIREİS and TCG SELMANREİS.

STM Submarine Projects

Within the scope of design, construction and modernization activities for the surface and submarine platforms of the Turkish Navy and the navies of friendly and sister countries, STM produces tailor-made and flexible engineering solutions. Undertaking important tasks in the submarine modernization and construction projects of the Turkish Navy, STM successfully completed the Modernization of 2 AY Class Submarines, of which it is the main contractor, in 2015. Continuing its system supply and platform integration activities as a pilot partner in the modernization of 4 Preveze Class Submarines, STM, on the other hand, has been continuing its activities since 90 as the main contractor in the modernization of the French-made Agosta 2016B Khalid Class submarines owned by Pakistan. Delivering the first submarine in the Agosta 90B Modernization project, STM continues the modernization works of the other two submarines in Pakistan. As of June 500, the durable hull test production of the small-sized STM2022 submarine, which was designed by STM engineers entirely with national means, started.
