Tender preparations are underway for the construction of the fourth phase of the Çiğli Treatment Plant. The recovery of the treatment water from the facility and its use in agriculture are among the planned targets.

In this context, the General Directorate of İZSU discussed the investments and projects it has been carrying out for 3 years, as well as new determinations regarding the elements that pollute the gulf and cause odor.

Soyer: We identified the problems, we solve them with determination

It was the first of these reasons and we took important steps towards its solution. We have determined that the second one is the design faults in the rather outdated Grand Canal Project, which is expected to purify the whole of Izmir. Finally, we saw that the water from the Çiğli Treatment Plant was discharged into one of the narrowest points of the Gulf and the shallowing problem in the inner bay. Today we have a very clear, scientific roadmap for how to clean up the Gulf. We are implementing this plan patiently and with full determination.”

Here are the steps taken within the scope of the new roadmap:

Revision started at Çiğli Wastewater Treatment Plant
Çiğli Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant will be revised within the scope of the road map announced by President Soyer. However, some measures were taken within the scope of the "Emergency Action Plan" to be implemented until the completion of the revision works. İZSU General Directorate is making improvements in the sludge unit of the facility, which has a daily capacity of 604 thousand 800 cubic meters at the first stage. Modular diffuser systems are installed to meet the oxygen need in aeration pools. Within the scope of the maintenance and repair tender, covers, valves, diffusers, blowers, transmission lines, infrastructure, mixers and pumps will be overhauled in advanced biological pools and their units, and the facility will be renewed in a way. With these processes, the wear and tear due to years will be eliminated, and the quality of the treatment water and the efficiency of the facility will be increased.

Mud fields are being rehabilitated
Determining that one of the reasons for the odor problem is the mud fields in Çiğli Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant, İZSU closed the storage area for dumping as of 1 July. As in the original design of the project, the disposal of the sludge in licensed facilities was started. A joint project is carried out with İzmir Institute of Technology (İYTE) for the disposal of sludge accumulated in the field. The study, which will begin to be implemented at the end of the year, will completely eliminate one of İzmir's odor sources.

Discharge point is changing
One of the important steps that İZSU General Directorate will take for Körfez will be to change the discharge point of Çiğli Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant. In line with the scientific reports prepared, the transfer of water from the facility to the middle Gulf instead of the inner Gulf will prevent the shallowing in the inner Gulf.

The feasibility project of the facility's treated water recovery and transmission lines was completed in June. It is aimed to use approximately 80 million cubic meters of water to be recovered from the facility in the first stage, for urban green field irrigation, for agricultural irrigation in the Menemen Plain, and for environmental benefit in the wetland area of ​​the Gediz delta. In this context, the stage of preparation of application projects was started.

Tender for the 4th phase
İZSU General Directorate will also carry out the construction of the 4th phase units of the plant within the scope of the steps to be taken to increase the capacity and efficiency of the Çiğli Treatment Plant. The tender for the 4th phase, the foundation of which was laid in previous years, but whose construction was stopped later, will be launched again this month. Thanks to the renovation works at the facility, there will be no problems in terms of treatment capacity and efficiency until the 4th phase is completed.

Rainwater and sewer lines are separated
Having determined that one of the main sources of pollution and odor in the bay is the lack of rainwater infrastructure and making significant investments in this area for 3 years, İZSU has completed the construction of 196 kilometers of canal so far. An additional 200 kilometers will be built in the next two years. Thus, rain water will reach the Gulf without any pollution, and sewage water will directly reach the treatment plants within its closed system.

Great cleaning in the main collector line
Comprehensive cleaning works carried out on the main collector line of the Grand Canal Project have also come to an end. Continuing its efforts to prevent the odor problem uninterruptedly, İZSU started from Konak Basmane Square. Bayraklı It has completed the cleaning works of the collector line with a length of 10 thousand meters and a diameter of 2200 millimeters, reaching Manas Boulevard. Possible loss of life and property due to possible floods in the region was prevented.

Cleaning operation continues in streams
Efforts to clean up the sludge that accumulates in the streams pouring into the bay from the city center with precipitation throughout the year and cause odor formation continue regularly. Within the scope of the works, nearly 60 thousand tons of waste material was removed from the Manda Stream in order to prevent pollution from reaching the sea. By removing approximately 2 thousand tons of material from the Cheesecioğlu Stream and 3 thousand 450 tons from the Ahirkuyu Stream, both the gulf cleaning and the formation of odor in the areas where there are residences and business centers are prevented.

Dredging is done in stream mouths

The works carried out to clean and protect the bay also prevent floods and overflows by providing hydraulic flow of water in heavy rains.

In order to prevent the negative physical changes in the water quality of the inner gulf by affecting the current regime of the Gulf and to eliminate the odor complaints due to shallowing, the second phase of the dredging works to be carried out at the mouths of the Manda, Cheesecioğlu, Bornova and Bostanlı creeks has started. As of June 24, İZSU teams started dredging activities in Bostanlı Creek.

Odor removal filters are installed
İZSU General Directorate, which is advancing towards a sustainable and cleaner environment target, continues to place manhole air purification and odor removal filters in sewer chimneys in areas with odor problems. With the cleaning work on the approximately 1000 km sewer line, the oxygen rate in the lines is increased with hydrogen peroxide. Thus, odor formation is prevented.

Industrial facilities are also under the spotlight
Meetings were held with the AOSB management and the authorities of the facilities in order to prevent the sharp odors originating from the solvent-based production factories within the Atatürk Organized Industrial Zone. It was agreed that the facilities should take measures to minimize odor and make the necessary investments.
