A Brand New City Twice Bigger Than Berlin Is Being Established in China

A city is being built in northern China, which will house a future population of 2,5 million and occupies more than twice the area of ​​Berlin. The name of the city, which was planned and built to take some of Beijing's burden, is Xiongan. The settlement area of ​​the new city, which is planned as a pure residence, is planned as 100 square kilometers for now, but this area will be up to 200 square kilometers in the medium term.

Referred to as the “New Xiongan District,” this city will be an administrative division similar to Shanghai's Pudong County. Xiongan's primary goal is to lighten the burden of Beijing by attracting some activities outside of its functions as the capital.

Xiongan is located in the middle of the Beijing, Tianjin and Baoding/Shijiazhuang triangle. This location will allow it to better coordinate, relieve and at the same time connect this huge watershed of 50 to 60 million inhabitants. Indeed, its geographical location is suitable for this; As a matter of fact, it is 55 kilometers from Beijing Airport and 80 kilometers from Tianjin. On the other hand, Hebei's capital, Shijiazhuang, 200 kilometers away, will also be accessible in less than an hour, thanks to a high-speed train. Thus, it will be possible to work in one of these three major cities and reside in Xiongan.

However, Xiongan will not be just a huge dormitory-city identity. It is also planned to develop high-tech industries and innovative resources in it. As a matter of fact, the China Satellite Network Corporation, which was established on April 22, 2021, will also be based in Xiongan. Beyond this, centers for different export-oriented branches will be established, where foreign direct investment will be directed.

A digital and ecological city will be established

There are special regions in China that have some special status, such as Shenzhen, Hongkong, and Macao. A city management model will be created in Xiongan, similar to these, but in which everything will be digitized from the beginning.

On the other hand, environmental ecology and not overloading natural resources will be considered. The relatively low construction area will leave room for development in this area. As a matter of fact, a forest will be created in Xiongan by afforesting 30 thousand hectares of land. Here, the planners will build an internationally first-class, green, modern and smart ecological city “adorned with blue, green, fresh and light colors” by creating large green and wet areas.
