Izmir Metropolitan Municipality added a new one to its environmental projects. Department of Parks and Gardens started to obtain compost fertilizer with high added value from animal and vegetable wastes. The organic fertilizer obtained will be used in afforestation areas and agriculture.

Another environmental project that will set an example for Turkey is being implemented in İzmir. The Metropolitan Municipality, which converts plant wastes into organic fertilizer at the facility established in Çiğli Harmandalı and is preparing to establish an organic fertilizer facility in Bornova, started to obtain compost fertilizer with high added value from organic wastes at the construction site of the Park and Gardens Department in Konak. It is planned to produce one thousand tons of organic fertilizer per year in the facility where organic wastes from the Vegetable and Fruit Market of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, pruning wastes of parks and gardens and animal excrement in Izmir Natural Life Park are evaluated.

“We mix them all and get the perfect product”

Organic waste brought to the construction site by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Parks and Gardens Department is subjected to a controlled decomposition under aerobic conditions and converted into compost fertilizer. Bilal Kaya, Senior Agricultural Engineer at the Department of Parks and Gardens, said, “We pass these wastes through the compost mixing machine and thus we take it under control. The nitrogen of the grass, the potassium of the fallen leaves, the lignin-cellulose ratio of sawdust, and the nutritional element ratios of the fertilizers we get from İzmir Natural Life Park are high. The capabilities of each of these materials are different. When we mix them in appropriate proportions, we obtain an excellent organic product.”

“It ensures the sustainability of waste management”

Saying that everything organic rots within a year or two by itself, Kaya said, “Thanks to ventilation and irrigation, we can increase microorganism activity and cause decay within two months. Organic material, which is normally left to rot, is not qualified to be used later. But thanks to controlled decay, we transform all organic wastes into usable, high value-added fertilizers. This fertilizer retains water in the soil. Our President Tunç SoyerThanks to this work we carry out in line with the vision of "Another Water Management is Possible", we will have achieved a more green environment with less water. At the same time, since we evaluate these wastes, there will be no need for them to be transported to the Harmandalı Regular Waste Storage Area”.

It is used in agriculture and afforestation areas.

After the treated wastes are analyzed and documented to be a sterile material, they are made ready for use in the afforestation areas of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, planting pits, agricultural areas in the city exposed to fire, and urban open green areas.

Benefits of compost organic fertilizer

Compost organic fertilizer prevents erosion by sticking the soil grains together. The most important feature is that it provides plant nutrients. It also increases the spongy structure of the soil, enabling it to retain water and aeration. The soil creates an environment where plants can easily absorb nutrients. It increases the activity of soil creatures.
