Fire Drill in Istanbul Islands

Under the coordination of the Fire Brigade Department of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) and AKOM teams, a large-scale fire drill, including forest, was carried out in the Islands. In the exercise, which does not look like real fire scenarios, it was tested how to respond as soon as possible in the event of a fire, and which methods to extinguish the fire faster before it spreads over a large area.

121 STAFF, 26 LAND VEHICLES, 6 MARINE VEHICLES…

With the arrival of summer months, increasing air temperatures bring fires with it. In order to be prepared for both natural fires and fires caused by external factors, the Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) and Istanbul Department conducted fire drills in Büyükada and Heybeliada. In addition to İSKİ, Emergency Aid and Lifesaving Directorate, İGDAŞ, Şehir Hatları A.Ş., Police Department, Marine Services Directorate, Veterinary Directorate, Operations Directorate; AFAD, Regional Directorate of Forestry, Provincial Security Directorate, Adalar District Municipality, 112 Emergency/UMKE, AYEDAŞ, 1st Army Command, Coastal Security Directorate, Coast Guard Command, 1st Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry participated. A total of 121 personnel participated in the exercise, 26 land vehicles and 6 sea vehicles intervened.

SCENARIO STARTED WITH A FIRE WARNING

In accordance with the scenario, the Adalar Forest Fire Operation Plan took action with all its units, upon the notification of a fire at Büyükada Yörü Ali Beach by telephone to the Büyükada Station switchboard at around 11.13 am as per the scenario. In line with the notification, all the operation teams included in the Islands Forest Fire Operation Plan were dispatched to the region and fire extinguishing activities were started. The fire, which came to the region, was intervened both from the land and from the sea. According to the scenario, a citizen affected by the fire was delivered to the ambulance after the first response at the scene. Veterinary Department teams intervened in the animals affected by the fire. In the past years, the 'screening method', which prevents the spread of forest fires to a wide area, has also been tested. By interfering with the fire with the curtain method, the flames were blocked and the flames were prevented from spreading to another direction.

“2022 YEAR OF EXERCISES”

Speaking after the exercise, Head of Fire Brigade Remzi Albayrak stated that 2022 is the year of the exercise and said, “As you know, the summer season has started, so the summer season has started. Islands have a special place. After the summer season starts, there is a great activity here in terms of population, population density, and again, the risk of fire is very high due to the fact that there are many forests in the Islands. As 2022 is the year of drills, we wanted to organize a drill here through the Fire Brigade Department under the coordination of AKOM, and we held an exercise here within the framework of the IMM Emergency and Disaster Response Plan, again within the framework of the Islands Fire Operations Plan. Ten units of our Metropolitan Municipality, as well as the teams of the First Army Command and the General Directorate of Coastal Security contributed to this exercise. Currently, we have carried out this exercise with 121 personnel, 26 land vehicles and 6 sea vehicles. Our aim here is to increase our reflexes in case of any fire. To identify the shortcomings that will emerge as a result of the exercise we will do here, to determine our truths and to take various measures in order to eliminate these shortcomings from now on. To prevent the spread of intentional screening method. Because you know, normally we only intervene in residential areas or residential areas, fires. This is not a forest fire drill. Because if there is a forest fire drill, the size of the job changes. AFAD is our top roof in case of intervention. We have developed a lot of screening systems to prevent the spread of the forest. We implemented this. So that's why that's why." he said.
