Advice from the Expert for Report Card Day

Specialist Psychologist Begüm Özkaya stated that students are not the only ones responsible for bad report cards and said that a wrong approach to a student who receives a bad report card may also negatively affect the future education life.

Specialist Psychologist Begüm Özkaya gave important warnings to the parents of the students before the upcoming report period.

Özkaya stated that the report cards received by the students are not only an indicator of course success and said, “Parents should know that; The report card is not only an indicator of the success or failure of the child, but also an indicator of his participation in the lessons, his relationship with his friends and teachers, the lessons he is interested in or not, his attitude towards school and learning. In this sense, when children get a report card, just focusing on the notes may prevent us from seeing the other characteristics of the child. For this reason, the report card should not be considered only as a course success. At the same time, although the grades of the student indicate success in school, the aspects that are unsuccessful do not mean that they cannot be successful in other areas.

“Do not argue in front of the child!”

Özkaya emphasized that parents should not argue with students due to unsuccessful report cards and said, “Especially some parents blame each other instead of evaluating the reasons for the situation of their children. Fathers see mothers as teachers at home, and mothers see fathers as school principals. For example; The father can blame the mother for not teaching the child a lesson, and the mother for not controlling the child enough. In this case, primary school children feel more guilty, depressed, unhappy, reluctant to learn; On the other hand, children in high school are more likely to encounter negative behavior tables.

“Steps must be taken to solve it”

Specialist Psychologist Begüm Özkaya stated that the student is not the only one responsible for the bad report card and said, “Also, it should be known that the child is not the only responsible for the bad report card and it is necessary to share this responsibility with the child. Steps should be taken to find and solve the reasons for the child's school failure. These reasons; personal characteristics, family-related reasons, and school-related reasons.

“Let their parents follow this path”

Özkaya pointed out that wrong reactions or approaches will also affect the future education life of the student and said;
“The way parents should follow is as follows. You should start the conversation by appreciating them. Then, the reasons for bad grades should be investigated and what can be done to correct this situation should be decided together with the child. Your child's report card should not be used as a reason for boasting or embarrassing others. Some families may turn to financial reward first. They can choose to buy the toys, bicycles, computer games that the child most wants. The first reward should be verbal, such as saying 'well done' and congratulating. After that, financial rewards suitable for his age can also be received. Of course, it should not be forgotten that gifts with high monetary value do not contribute to learning and school success.”

“Holiday means rest”

Finally, Özkaya underlined that vacation means rest and said, “Sometimes parents forget that vacation means rest. For them, the vacation can become a planned process, mostly after the correction of bad grades. However, even if the children's report cards are bad, they should rest for a part of the holiday. If there is a repetition or make-up or homework given since this holiday is a mid-term, it is more appropriate to start soon after the end of the holiday. As a parent, the reactions you give to your child will also affect the child's other learning. Not frightening children to receive new information and encouraging them to overcome the difficulties they face will contribute to increasing not only their success in their education years, but also their quality of life.”
