With the approach of summer and the effects of the sun showing more and more, eye health and ways to protect from harmful sun rays have come to the fore again.

While many diseases can occur in the eye exposed to the sun's rays, the sun's rays can cause moles, stains, and tumor formation on the eyelids.

One of the doctors of Kaşkaloğlu Eye Hospital, Ophthalmology Specialist Op. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Kahraman stated that since the amount of ultraviolet rays reaching our world in summer is 3 times higher than in winter, protection from ultraviolet is much more important in summer.

Pointing out that the negative effects of ultraviolet rays on our eyes and the damage they may cause on the eyelids over many years can lead to serious damage extending to cancer, Kahraman emphasized that quality sunglasses should be used to protect from harmful sun rays.

Stating that ultraviolet rays cause cancer formation in the skin covering the eyelids, as in other parts of the body, Op. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Kahraman said, “While a tumor that may occur in any part of the body can be removed with an easier operation, this is more difficult in the eyelid skin. Therefore, any problem that may occur in the eyelid skin can lead to much more serious consequences.

Increases the Risk of Cataracts

Stating that ultraviolet rays also increase the risk of cataract formation, Kahraman said, “As a result of the filtering of ultraviolet rays reaching our eyes by the cornea layer and the lens of the eye, only 1% of these rays reach the retina (net layer). Yellow spot damage may occur in those who look directly at the sun for a long time. It is thought that there is a relationship between the aging of the eye center, which we call the yellow spot that occurs in advanced ages, and the amount of sunlight that people have been exposed to in the past.

Children's Eyes Are More Sensitive

Noting that even if we do not look directly at the sun, the rays reflected from the objects are enough to damage our eye health, Kahraman explained that the eye lenses of children and babies are much more transparent and sensitive than adults.

Underlining that the most effective method to protect our eyes from the harmful effects of sun rays is to use quality sunglasses, Op. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Kahraman noted that poor quality glasses sold on the street do more harm than good.

Reminding that when we wear poor quality sunglasses with colored glass, our pupils enlarge and more ultraviolet rays enter our eyes, Kahraman said, “A good sunglasses should reduce harmful ultraviolet rays while reducing the light to a level that does not disturb the eyes. The most important point when purchasing glasses is the protection values against ultraviolet rays. While most good quality sunglasses filter more than 95% of ultraviolet rays, this rate can be 99% or higher.

Especially in the summer, warning children not to stay under the sun's rays much, Op. Dr. Hanife Öztürk Kahraman added that children should definitely go out into the sun with a hat and quality sunglasses.
