Metro Istanbul will host the World Public Transport Industry!

Metro Istanbul, affiliated to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), will host the UITP Turkey Conference, organized by the International Union of Public Transporters (UITP) with the theme of "Financial, Business and Operational Continuity After the Epidemic in the Eurasian Region".

Özgür Soy, General Manager of Metro Istanbul, Turkey's largest urban rail system operator, and UITP Marketing, Membership and Services Senior Director Kaan Yıldızgöz, signed a cooperation agreement for the UITP Turkey Conference, which will be held for the 10th time this year. Metro Istanbul will host the conference on June 15 with the theme of “Financial, Business and Operational Continuity After the Pandemic in the Eurasia Region”.

The conference, where experts from different countries will share their experiences, will provide a unique opportunity to discuss the present and future of public transport and to meet with international industry leaders.

“Our goal is to be in the top 3 in Europe!”

Özgür Soy, General Manager of Metro Istanbul, representing the public transportation sector in Turkey at the UITP Policy Board, stated that they operate one of the largest rail system networks in Europe with their rapidly increasing metro investments in recent years, and they cooperate with UITP in many fields.
Stating that the Sustainable Transportation Master Plan and Climate Action Plan, especially announced by IMM, are in line with the vision of UITP, General Manager Soy said, “Istanbul is one of the cities with the largest public transportation systems in the world. The problems and agendas of all metropolises are obvious. very similar. We have personally experienced how important information sharing among rail system operators is during the pandemic period. UITP is the most important platform in the world to provide communication between operators. For this reason, we will continue to increase our cooperation with UITP.”

Stating that they continued their investments without slowing down despite the economic bottleneck in our country and in the world in the last two years, General Manager Özgür Soy said, “We commissioned the M2020 Mecidiyeköy-Mahmutbey Metro Line in October 7 and in January 2021, the T5 Cibali-Alibeyköy Bus Terminal Tram Line. Then, in May 2021, we put Masko and Bahariye stations of the M9 Ataköy-Olympic Metro Line into the service of Istanbul residents. In this process, we completed our investments for F4 Rumeli Hisarüstü. We will commission the Aşiyan Funicular Line and the M8 Bostancı-Dudullu Metro Line in the near future. As a large and exciting team, we are working day and night to become one of the top 3 railway operators in Europe in a very short time, especially our Metropolitan Mayor. Ekrem İmamoğlu and our Deputy Secretary General Pelin Alpkökin.”

Metro Istanbul's UITP

Kaan Yıldızgöz, Senior Director of Marketing, Membership and Services at UITP, who stated that he is one of the strongest stakeholders and one of the important players of the international sector, underlined the recent problems of the sector and the solutions for them. It will be discussed at the conference to be held in Istanbul.

UITP Secretary General Mohamed Mezghani will make the opening speech at the conference, which will focus on post-pandemic public transport, financing resources in public transport, innovation for sustainable transport, legal, institutional and administrative structure. In addition to representatives from Turkey, central government officials, local governments, public transport operators, industrial organizations, research centers from different countries, academics and consultants will attend the conference.
