The Mediterranean Corridor is a strategic project to build a standard railway axis between the French border and Algeciras as part of one of the nine corridors of the Core Network of Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T).

When the work is finished, the division will be integrated into the European Rail Corridor, which runs from Spain to Hungary via France, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, meaning that passengers and cargo will be able to travel in Europe on an international scale.

Most of the project will be carried out on the 155 km section between Castellón de la Plana and L'Ametlla de Mar and the 13 km Tortosa-L'Aldea/Amposta branch line.

The contract signed by Adif Alta Velocidad consists of the renewal and adaptation of signaling installations in the Castellón de la Plana- L'Ametlla section and the branch line connecting L, due to the transition from Iberian size to standard size. Tortosa and Aldea Amposta. With the completion of this project, the Mediterranean Corridor will gain particular importance as a strategic axis for the promotion of rail transport.

Most of the project will take place on the 155 km section between Castellón de la Plana and L'Ametlla de Mar, where work will be undertaken to renovate and adapt interlocking installations and signaling area elements. Due to the change in size from Iberian (1.668 mm) to standard or international (1.435 mm).

A similar process will take place on the 13 km long Tortosa-L'Aldea/Amposta branch line.

As required by Adif Alta Velocidad, Thales will install new L905E electronic interlocks in the Castellón-L'Ametlla section and adapt the existing ones in the Tortosa-L'Aldea/Amposta section to the same type. New Thales signaling elements such as TTC line circuits, AzLM/ZP30K axle counters, L700H electro-hydraulic actuators and LED signals will also be installed on site.

This new project, with an estimated completion time of 22 months, will be implemented in four phases until commissioning of all standard sized installations with renewed interlocks and site staff. After commissioning, the installation of the ERTMS level 1 system, which also uses Thales technology, will be completed.

“Thales has applied its technology to different parts of the Mediterranean Corridor in recent years. Being able to contribute to the modernization of the Castellón-L'Ametlla division is a milestone for us as we will participate in building an important link for transport. A reality from Spain to the rest of Europe.” – Fernando Ortega, Director of Transport for Thales Spain.

“We are proud to once again support the modernization of the Mediterranean Corridor with Thales advanced technology. This is a new opportunity to build an efficient and more sustainable rail network. Thanks to our innovative digital solutions and Thales expertise, the Mediterranean Corridor will become a strategic axis for rail transport.” – Dr. Yves Joannic, General Manager of Thales Main Line Signalling.
