Bolu Governor Ahmet Ümit announced that a congress center, sports complexes and hotels will be built on an area of 38 hectares opened for development in the Köroğlu Mountains.

Congress center, sports complexes and hotels will be built in the area opened for development in the Köroğlu Mountains. TMMOB Bolu Provincial Coordination Board Secretary Erol Perçin said, "The area of the region is larger than the area covered by the Kanal Istanbul project, which was met with the reaction of a large part of our country and did not take into account science and technology."

A part of Köroğlu Mountains was declared as “Cultural Tourism Conservation and Development Zone” by the decision of the Council of Ministers in 2015. As a result of the lawsuit filed by the Chamber of Architects of TMMOB, the 6th Chamber of the Council of State decided to cancel only the eastern border of the said region. With the arrangement made after the decision, the area size was reduced from 51 thousand 450 hectares to 38 thousand 848 hectares.

According to the news of Ahin Aslan from Newspaper Wall; Governor Ahmet Ümit, who attended the May council meeting of the Bolu Municipality, answered the question of CHP Councilor Cumhur Bandakçıoğlu about the area. According to the governor, a congress center and hotels will be built in the region.

Three tenders have been made for the project so far. The third tender was completed recently. Indicating that the work on the project has started, Ümit argued that no trees will be cut within the scope of the project. However, environmental and urban planning experts do not agree with Governor Ümit.

“RANT PROJECT”

TMMOB Bolu Provincial Coordination Board Secretary Erol Perçin said that a large part of the region includes endemic plants, wildlife, alpine meadows and old forests. Perçin said, “Therefore, it is clear that the opening of the region for construction will not make any sense in terms of protecting natural life due to its nature. Moreover, the area of the region is larger than the area covered by the Kanal Istanbul project, which was met with the reaction of a large part of our country and did not take into account science and technology.”

Noting that most of the projects described as “oriented towards the development of Bolu” are aimed at the happiness of a handful of minorities, Perçin evaluated such projects as “rent projects”.

TEMA Provincial Representative pointed out that thousands of living species in the region and more than one endemic plant species living only here are under threat.

Turkish Foresters Association Bolu Representative Kanber Öztoprak also noted that there is no similar project in Turkey. Öztoprak said, “A similar project was wanted to be done in Antalya. The project was canceled when the non-governmental organizations there reacted. The regions in Bolu and Antalya were also declared as tourism regions. There is Kartalkaya right now. But what good does Kartalkaya have for Bolu? The customer comes, but passes directly without stopping by Bolu. We are not against projects that will contribute to the people of Bolu, but projects that will bring income to the local people and that will not harm the natural life should be done," he said.
