Pointing out that the number of countries where the virus is seen is increasing day by day, Akar emphasized the importance of hygiene.

The mysterious hepatitis disease that emerged in children after the Covid-19 pandemic, which affected the world, causes concern. The cause of the disease, which is mostly seen in children between the ages of 1 and 14, cannot be determined exactly. The disease, which was first seen in England, presents with symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and jaundice. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Eşrefpaşa Hospital Pediatrics Polyclinic, Specialist. Dr. Ebru Akar gave information about hepatitis.

Mysterious hepatitis can lead to a deadly process

Stating that the disease, which first appeared in 13 children in England at the beginning of April with the complaints of vomiting and abdominal pain without fever, caused concern, Dr. Dr. Akar said, “It appeared in countries such as England, Canada, Spain, Israel, the USA, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Norway, France and Romania. The reason is not fully known. More than 200 cases have emerged so far. There is no reported case from Turkey yet. It manifests itself with some gastrointestinal findings such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and jaundice. This event, which we call 'mysterious hepatitis', can lead to a fatal process that can lead to liver failure and bankruptcy. "This is extremely scary for us," he said.

Children's immunity needs to be strengthened

Underlining that jaundice is observed in children in hepatitis disease, Akar said, “Today, we can protect our children against Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. Because our health centers carry out this system regularly. None of the reported sick children could be associated with the Covid 19 pandemic, the rate of contagion is not high, but it can be fatal, and there have been cases of children requiring liver transplantation. We should protect our children against infectious diseases as much as possible. For this, we should pay attention to their nutrition and take care to strengthen their immunity,” he said.

hygiene is important

Emphasizing the importance of paying attention to the hygiene rules in mysterious hepatitis, Akar used the following expressions: “Especially hand hygiene (washing hands with water and soap), cleaning the surfaces that the sick person comes into contact with and respiratory hygiene (covering the mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing and coughing, frequent ventilation of the rooms) should not be neglected. It is important to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after changing the diaper of children with diarrhea. Close contact with sick people should be avoided. At the beginning of the issues that parents should pay special attention to are the change in the color of the children's stool and urine, and the yellowness of the eyes and skin. If these symptoms occur, liver functions should be examined in detail and a hepatitis test should be performed.
