The Turkish Automotive Supply Industry's umbrella organization, the Automotive Vehicles Supply Manufacturers Association (TAYSAD), organized the second “TAYSAD Electric Vehicles Day” event, which it held to share the effects of the transformation in the field of electrification, in Manisa OSB. In the organization; The effects of the developments in the field of electrification on the automotive sector and the risks and opportunities in the supply industry, which has a critical importance at this point, were discussed. Making the opening speech of the event, TAYSAD Vice President Berke Ercan said, “Electrification is no longer at the door, it is inside our homes. "We see it coming at us like a tsunami wave," he said. Yalçın Arsan, founding partner of Arsan Danışmanlık, mentioned the electrification process and said, “This is; It is a transformation and a permanent situation that is beyond us, caused by global policy change. We have 13-14 years to take action,” he said.
With the "Electric Vehicles Day" event organized by TAYSAD (Association of Vehicles Supply Manufacturers), the effects of the transformation in the field of electrification on the supply industry were examined. In the organization where experts in their fields took part as speakers; The effects of the transformation in the field of electrification on the supply industry and the steps to be taken in this transformation were discussed.
In his opening speech, TAYSAD Vice President Berke Ercan stated that the third event, which was held in Kocaeli and the second in Manisa OIZ, will be held in Bursa and the fourth event will be held in Kocaeli again. Ercan said, “Electrification is no longer at the door, it is inside our homes. We see it coming upon us like a tsunami wave. However, we think that, as the main industry and the supply industry, we still cannot create the awareness that we should have in the automobile industry. For this reason, we decided to organize this organization as a series. All our efforts are to realize this big change that electrification, autonomous and connected vehicles will bring, and to activate the supply industry.”
“The issue has reached a global dimension beyond us”
Arsan Danışmanlık founding partner Yalçın Arsan also discussed the point reached by the electrification process. Touching on the climate change problem, Arsan said, “The world has set a net zero carbon target for 2050. Sometimes as a sector; “Should we switch to electric cars or not? We fall into the misconception of "What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?" The event is beyond us. The issue has reached a global dimension beyond us. "This is a transformation and a permanent situation that is beyond us, caused by global policy change," he said. “After 2035, vehicles with internal combustion engines will not be produced. We have 13-14 years to take action in this context,” Arsan said, “If we agree on the course of the industry, we have the opportunity to gradually revise the markets we will address our production and turn our operations in this direction. Some manufacturers may appear to be exiting the game, but new manufacturers are entering the game as well. These are brands that could be at some point in our target audience. In addition, new opportunities are emerging with the concept of micro mobility. This business is more extensive than we think. And electrification is permanent,” he said.
By 2040, around 52-53 million passenger electric vehicles are on the road!
Inci GS Yuasa R&D Center Department Manager Sibel Eserdağ gave important information about developments in the sector and battery technologies. Referring to the issue of charging stations, Eserdağ said that it is predicted that there will be 2025 million charging stations in 1, 2030 million in 3,5 and 2050 million in 16,3. Providing information that we will see around 2040-52 million passenger electric vehicles in the world by the 53s, Eserdağ said, “At this point, battery production figures are also a very critical issue. A kilowatt-hour battery pack costs around $137. Compared to 2010, this came from $191 to $137. Also, $100 is a critical threshold. With this value, it comes to a level where it is equal to the cost of internal combustion engine vehicles.”
“A minimum of 2030 thousand electric vehicles will be produced in Turkey in 750”
Stating that Turkey's population is estimated to reach 2030 million by 90, Eserdağ said, “Today, the number of vehicles per thousand people is 154, and this figure will increase to 2030 in 300. The total vehicle stock will be 2030 million in 27, of which 2-2.5 million will be electric. If another target of Turkey is realized, 2030 percent of vehicles will be electric by 30. There is a total of 2030 thousand electric vehicle production in Turkey in 750. It is said that this figure may be 1 million. Eserdağ also gave information about the point of battery technologies.
Five trends in future technologies!
Karsan R&D Director Barış Hulisioğlu also made statements about the transportation technologies of the future. Emphasizing that reducing the carbon footprint is the duty of every individual, Hulisioğlu said, “The use of electric vehicles in the future is an inevitable end. In addition, the tendency towards ownership is decreasing, and the use of public transportation is increasing. Shared vehicle applications such as electric scooters, electric bicycles and car rentals are becoming widespread. Hulisioğlu stated that five trends can be mentioned, namely "electrical transformation", "shared vehicle use", "modularity", "autonomous vehicle" and "connected vehicles", specific to the new technologies of the future.
After 2023, electric vehicle conversion will increase in Turkey!
Explaining that the electric transformation in Turkey is progressing slowly compared to other countries, Hulisioğlu said, "We think that the electric vehicle transformation in Turkey will increase rapidly after 2023, with the clarification of incentive mechanisms and the expansion of the charging infrastructure." Hulisioğlu explained that “The most important step for us to ensure sustainability in adapting to new technologies is to invest in people” and said, “Hulisioğlu is at the center of the technologies of the future. In order to keep up with this transformation, it is necessary to embrace the competent and creative human resources. Another issue is customer focus. We must shape our products and services according to the needs of the end customer. We need to follow customer needs, analyze future trends and shape our product roadmaps accordingly.”
“We all need to work together”
Automotive Technology Platform Director Ernur Mutlu said, “If 80 percent of what we produce goes to Europe, we have no chance to do anything else since Europe has made its way and made its decision. We all have to work together,” he said. Referring to the work of the platform, Mutlu said, “We would like to carry out industry-oriented studies in the next period. In this framework, we first prepared a work plan for 2022. We have detailed the working groups, activities and other studies that we will create in this work plan. Finally, in the last quarter of the year, we will hold a workshop where we will evaluate all the work we have done and create our strategy plans for the future. The distance we will cover this year is of great interest to all of us, especially in terms of being industry-oriented.”
“This is a hybrid move”
The event continued with a question and answer session. Answering the questions of the participants about the charging stations, Arsan said, “The charging station issue is progressing with the structuring of the private sector in Turkey. Companies that invest here are establishing charging networks on inter-city roads. TOGG also has statements on this subject. The fact that electric cars add to our lives is economical, and the most important point of this is that the charging station is located at home or in our workplace. We expect potential users to install self-financed charging stations where they live. We definitely need to come up with our own solution individually. So this is a hybrid movement,” he said. When asked about the non-vehicle use of batteries, Eserdağ said, “Batteries do not expire. These batteries can be used in other areas after being used in vehicles. Because they are long-lasting products”.
In the event sponsored by İnci GS Yuasa and Maxion İnci Wheel Group, the participants had the opportunity to examine and test drive the electric vehicles brought by MG, Suzuki and Karsan. The electric vehicle EFE, made by the students of İzmir Katip Çelebi University, was also exhibited on the test track.
