Soyer: “Creating a resilient Izmir is one of our top priorities”

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer“Creating an Izmir that is resistant to climate crisis and drought is one of our priorities. This is why the Flamingo Nature Park, which we are examining here today, is so important. Because we have proven that water saving can be achieved by using plants that do not want water while growing in this park, such as black herb and rosemary, in the urban landscape. On the other side of the park, you can meet the birds of İzmir at our bird watching spot. In addition, with our boat tours that will start soon, we are happy to create a multi-faceted, nature-integrated park where you can see the flamingos, the original owners of the Gediz Delta, and dozens of different bird species closely.

Plants that do not want water such as Izmir thyme and oleander were planted.

In the park located inside the Mavişehir Fisherman's Sanctuary, species such as blackthorn, gum, İzmir thyme, oleander, tamarisk, heather (pure) were planted, which are suitable for the climate and nature of İzmir. In the creation of the park, attention was paid to easy and cost-effective maintenance and less water use, as well as aesthetic appearance. Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerAfter the call of "to grow plants that do not want water" to the producers, the producers turned to these plants and started to grow plants that did not need water while growing. Most of the plants used in İzmir's new generation park, which does not require much irrigation, were purchased from cooperative member producers who heed this call. By using natural plants that do not require water in the landscape, approximately 20 million liras will be saved in annual irrigation costs at the same time.

Added plant and bird information boards

Introductory signs have been added to the park for informational purposes. There are also information boards in the area containing the Gediz Delta, the Ancient Production Basin of the Gediz Delta and the bird species found in the Gediz Delta. In addition, two bird watching units were built. In the bird watching units, a panoramic drawing of the bird watching point in the park and a long information board containing the bird species of the Gediz Delta meet with the visitors. In this way, visitors will be able to take advantage of the specially prepared drawings about both the Gediz Delta and the plant and bird species in the delta, and get comprehensive information about bird watching. The park also includes a map of İzmir's five İzmirHeritage routes.
