A collective bargaining agreement was signed between İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and Tüm Bel-Sen, covering the improvement of the financial and social rights of approximately 6 thousand personnel. Speaking at the ceremony, President Soyer said, “Since I took office, I have said equal pay for equal work. In three years, we have come a long way in improving the conditions of all employees within the municipality.”

Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç SoyerWithin the scope of the principle of equal pay for equal work, a collective bargaining agreement was signed between İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and All Municipality and Local Administration Services Workers' Union (All Bel-Sen), concerning 5 thousand 850 personnel in İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, ESHOT and İZSU. President at the ceremony in the garden of Izmir Art Center Tunç Soyer, All Bel-Sen General Organization Secretary Bülent Türkmen, All Bel-Sen İzmir Branch No. 1 President Buse Engin, Branch Collective Bargaining Agreement and Legal Secretary Turgut Angün were the signatories of the contract.

At the ceremony, Mayor Soyer said, “I am happy to serve as the mayor of İzmir together with valuable companions like you. This pride is more than anything for me. Since I took office, I have said equal pay for equal work. In three years, we have come a long way in improving the conditions of all employees within the municipality. Not enough. We have made good gains in wages, social rights and equality level for our employees. Moreover, we continue to implement these in these days when we are living through one of the most difficult and painful periods in the history of the country. Rest assured, we are pushing our means to the fullest in order to repay the hard work of our workers. First, due to the epidemic and then the deepening economic crisis, our municipal revenues decreased significantly. However, you should have no doubt that we have tried to do our best for you, and we will continue to do so from now on. We would only be happy if we were able to cure your troubles for a while during this difficult process.”

call to 1 May

Metropolitan Mayor Soyer continued his words as follows: “Make sure that your job, overtime and work here is not just about earning your own living. Do not seek a savior for our grievances, rebellion and anger from the order we live in today. You are the one who will produce the solution for all these, we are. There will be no other. Do you know what about 6 thousand public workers mean? Maybe you are one of the most powerful organizations in the country. I just expect you to do what is necessary. What does it mean? Treat your fellow citizens well. Try to comply with his request. Provide service with a smile. Do what you do with passion. Think about what more can I do. Only what you will do will be the locomotive in the change of this country. No need for a magic wand. İzmir is the locomotive of this story. Don't expect that from any other city. No other city in Turkey can be as powerful a transformational force as Izmir. You and we together will change this story. Just yesterday, aggravated life sentence was given to Osman Kavala. If the old law was in question, it would be called execution. It means aggravated life sentence. What kind of anger, what kind of anger, hatred… 18 years for others… We are really going through a difficult time. We are going through a period where democracy and freedom of law are gradually disappearing from our palms. If democracy is losing the rule of law, it means that the economic rights you have acquired have no life. That's why we have to raise the struggle for democracy, the search for rights for the rule of law, the struggle for justice. There is no salvation alone. No one should think that they will survive on their own. Either we will be together or none of us. We have to be in the fields on 1 May.”

“President Soyer did not leave us alone in the field”

All Bel-Sen İzmir Branch No. 1 President Buse Engin, who stated that they were always supported by Mayor Soyer, said, “Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer He did not leave us alone in the fields. Since 2019, collective bargaining has recognized our right. It paved the way for us on gainful collective agreements and recognized our struggle. Together, we fought shoulder to shoulder not only for financial rights, but also for social and democratic rights. I would like to thank our esteemed mayor and the bureaucrats of our municipality.”

“We made a contract with very few examples in Turkey”

Providing information on the content of the agreement, Engin said, "Maybe the collective agreements we signed will not make us rich, but they will provide us with opportunities that will make us feel a little bit more comfortable in the crisis environment in the country. It's not just wage unionism. In order for us to become gender-sensitive individuals, we have become candidates for a real collective agreement with practices such as paternity leave and menstrual leave, which are very few examples in Turkey. And we will sign this today in a way that will not crush inflation.” he said.
