Heart diseases are one of the most common health problems today due to multiple factors. Saying that these are diseases due to more than one factor, Near East University Hospital Cardiology Department Head Prof. Dr. Hamza Duygu said that smoking, irregular diet, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption and excessive stress are among the important risk factors for cardiovascular health. prof. Dr. Duygu also stated that age, gender, genetic and ethnic factors are among the risk factors that impair cardiovascular health. Stating that age, gender, genetic and ethnic factors are in the group of unchangeable factors, Prof. Dr. Hamza Duygu stated that heart diseases due to smoking, unhealthy eating habits, disorders due to excessive alcohol consumption, sedentary life, obesity, blood lipids, blood pressure and high blood sugar are risk factors that can be corrected.

New lifestyle adversely affects eating habits

Stating that due to the rapid changes brought about by modern life and technology, Prof. Dr. Hamza Duygu stated that people have become less active now. Stating that the new lifestyle and eating habits are badly affected, Prof. Dr. Hamza Duygu stated that nutrition in this period is mostly based on foods of animal origin and said, “People do not consume enough vegetables and fruits. Combined with lack of physical activity, the risk of cardiovascular disease increases. In recent years, cardiovascular occlusion is more common in daily practice in the twenties or thirties. The most important reason for this is the habit of smoking. In addition, decrease in physical activity, weight gain, insufficient attention to nutrition and stress are among the contributing factors.

Healthy eating is important for heart health

Stating that regular eating habits are of great importance in protecting heart health, Prof. Dr. Hamza Duygu said that with a regular and healthy diet, risk factors that cause cardiovascular diseases can be avoided. prof. Dr. Duygu said, “With a healthy diet, it is possible to delay and reduce the development of overweight, high cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, which are risk factors that cause cardiovascular diseases. Western-style diet and fast food habits are gradually increasing in society. This situation can only be combated by targeting a healthy life.”

Regular diet reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease

Stating that the eating pattern started to settle from childhood, Prof. Dr. Hamza Duygu stated that the risk of cardiovascular disease can be reduced by establishing healthy diet habits from this age on. Saying that excessive calorie and salt consumption should be avoided, animal fats should be reduced, and an eating pattern should be adopted where vegetable oils, fresh vegetables, fiber-rich foods and fish should be consumed more. Dr. Duygu said that deaths from cardiovascular diseases are less common in regions where olive oil and fish consumption is higher. prof. Dr. Hamza Duygu said, “Less than 30 percent of the total consumed energy should be obtained from animal fats. Another issue that should be given priority is the fight against obesity and lack of movement, which are responsible for the alarming increase in the incidence of diabetes. The struggle that needs to be given at the community level on this issue can be realized by raising awareness through education. In addition to physical activity classes in schools, nutrition education should also be given. In schools, students should be provided with the opportunity to do physical education for 1 hour a day. Increasing the number and quality of centers where adults can do physical education should be supported by the state.

Smoking is the most important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases

Stating that smoking is one of the most important risk factors in cardiovascular diseases, Prof. Dr. Hamza Duygu stated that cigarette consumption causes many diseases along with cardiovascular occlusion. prof. Dr. Duygu said, “Unfortunately, cigarette consumption steals twenty years from our lives. It causes many diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, smokers should give up these habits. Like active smoking, passive smoking is also very important. “People should definitely stay away from the smoking environment,” he said.

50% of smokers die because of this

Stating that 50 percent of regular smokers are lost due to cigarette consumption, Prof. Dr. Hamza Duygu stated that approximately half of these deaths are seen in the middle age group. Stating that the amount of cigarettes smoked is directly related to cardiovascular diseases, cancer and respiratory system diseases, Prof. Dr. Duygu stated that there are similar risks in passive smoking. Stating that the first step in preventing smoking is education, Prof. Dr. Hamza Duygu stated that intensive efforts should be made in this regard in schools, workplaces and health institutions.
