Belgin Sarışık, better known by her stage name Bergen, (Born on 15 July 1959, Mersin – Died on 14 August 1989 in Pozantı, Adana), is a Turkish arabesque-fantasy singer.
Belgin Sarışık was born in Mersin as the last child of a family of seven children. She moved to Ankara with her mother after her parents divorced.
He started the middle department of the conservatory in Ankara. He dropped out of school. He worked as a civil servant in the PTT for a while.
He sang Orhan Gencebay's song "Batsin Bu Dünya" at the request of his friends at the Seyman Club pavilion, where he went to have fun with his friends one night in Ankara. The owner of the pavilion, who liked his voice, offered him to go on stage. After working in many pavilions in Ankara, he evaluated an offer and went to Adana.
He met Halis Özgür in Adana. Halis Özgür sends flowers to the singer every night and goes to the pavilion where Bergen works every night and watches the singer from the front table. They got married with the insistence and stubbornness of Halis Özgür. However, when it was revealed that Halis Özgür was married to someone else, Bergen ended the relationship.
In an interview with him in 1988, Bergen told what happened: “I was a person who loved the stage very much, frankly, a light for his art. He was a jealous person. At first he tried not to make me feel. But then it turned out, that's when I took my first beating. He took me off the stage and locked me in a house.”
After this separation, Bergen flees to Izmir with his mother. Halis Özgür gives 500 thousand liras to a hired killer and sends him to İzmir. On the night of October 31, 1982, at the gate of the New York pavilion in İzmir Alsancak, Bergen was about to get into a taxi with his mother, when the hired aggressor threw a bucket of rue on the singer. Bergen would describe the event as follows in a later interview:
“At that moment, my two eyes were gone. I am not aware of anything as I am a little drunk. I only hear screams. 'Take it to the water!' they say. Look at the fate, the waters are cut off. The water flows like a rope. They ripped off my clothes and wrapped me around me. At that moment, everything is so dark, I can't see anything, I can't open my eyes. A short time later, the squad car arrived. They took him to Ege University Hospital. I stayed in the hospital for 45 days, I received wound treatment.”
Bergen was seriously injured in this incident. Onur Erol, the famous plastic surgeon of the period, who followed the event from the press, voluntarily helped Bergen. Bergen was brought to Ankara from Izmir. Onur Erol described his patient's condition to Elif Berköz from Milliyet newspaper on 13 February 2010:
“I remember having operated on him at least three times. Because it takes months for the tissues to heal and mature in this type of burn. We stripped Bergen's skin with the sanding method. His right eye was protruding, his lids wouldn't close. I made an eye socket for the prosthesis to be added later. Nose wings were gone, cartilages were put there. Added skin from her hips to her face.”
and he was remembered with his hair on his right eye due to the damage to his right eye, and sometimes with his sunglasses. She started to be known as "Woman of Pain" after her fourth studio album, "Acıların Kadını", which was released in 1986, and after she played in the film of the same name with the album that tells her own life story. During his artistic life, he left many songs such as You Forgive, I Don't Forgive, You Can't Say Destiny, Don't Be Sorry For Me, Your Photo Is In My Hand, Why Shouldn't It Return.
Bergen, whose songs were included in many arabesque and nostalgia concept albums after his death, has been covered by many artists such as Ceylan Ertem, Ebru Yaşar, Emrah, Funda Arar, Muazzez Ersoy and Işın Karaca.
On the night of 14 August 1989 to 15 August, he was shot dead by his divorced wife in Pozantı, Adana; Bergen, who fit 30 long plays, 6 cassettes, 11 songs and 129 video film in his short life of 1 years, was buried in his hometown Mersin. The modern monumental cemetery in Taurus, Mersin is open to visitors.
