Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu pointed out that the number of vehicles passing through the Eurasia Tunnel reached 5 million in 79 years and announced that the tunnel's contribution to the country's economy totaled 8,1 billion liras.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu made a written statement about the Eurasia Tunnel. Stating that the Eurasia Tunnel is among the mega projects of the Ministry, Karaismailoğlu noted that the tunnel both relieves Istanbul traffic and contributes to the economy.
SAVING 25 MILLION HOURS OF TIME
Underlining that the tunnel was opened in 2016 and that 5 million vehicles passed through the Eurasia Tunnel in 79 years, Karaismailoğlu said, “According to the analysis based on traffic data; In addition to saving 1 hour of time, it also contributes to tunnel users with factors such as less fuel consumption, emission reduction and accident costs. In the calculations made considering the Kozyatağı – Bakırköy corridor, the drivers using the Eurasia Tunnel achieved 2021 million hours of time savings, 25 thousand tons of fuel savings, 35 thousand tons of emission reduction, 10 million vehicle-km reduction and accident cost savings in 65. The 5-year total contribution to the country's economy has reached 8,1 billion liras.
Reminding that the scheduled pricing system was put into use in the Eurasia Tunnel as of January 1, Karaismailoğlu noted that the vehicles had a 50 percent discount in the night tariff. Karaismailoğlu also stated that security measures were also kept in the foreground, “Last year, vehicles that broke down, ran out of fuel and had accidents in the Eurasia Tunnel were intervened in an average of 1 minute 55 seconds and the traffic was returned to its normal course in an average of 12 minutes 51 seconds. The emergency response performance in the tunnel was well above the operating standards and the average of similar projects in the world.”
5 THOUSAND TONS OF EMISSION REDUCTION IN 50 YEARS
Underlining that they also attach importance to the environmental friendliness of the investments, Minister of Transport Karaismailoğlu stated that the Eurasia Tunnel provides all of its electricity consumption in 2021 from recyclable sources, and that a total of 5 tons of waste was recovered in 37,2 years. Expressing that a total of 50 thousand tons of emission reduction has been achieved, Karaismailoğlu said, “With this amount, we have saved the equivalent of the task that approximately 2 million trees will undertake. Pacemaker, which was implemented in the Eurasia Tunnel for the first time in Turkey, was awarded an innovation award in 2021 by the New Civil Engineer (NCE) Magazine, one of the most respected publications of the Construction and Engineering sector. At the end of one year, the system reduced sudden speed changes in the tunnel by 69 percent. In the application area, where traffic efficiency increased by 8,5 percent, no traffic accidents occurred, and traffic congestion decreased by 53 percent. It has contributed to the prevention of environmental pollution by reducing the exhaust gases by up to 12 percent.
