Obesity Surgery Increased in Pandemic!

Obesity and Metabolic Surgeon Assoc. Dr. Gül Bora Makal gave important information about the subject. Obesity is one of the biggest health problems of our age. Along with the increase in obesity, many serious diseases such as cholesterol disorder, diabetes, some cancer diseases, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease that accompany obesity threaten life.

Dr. Gül Bora Makal said, “The new way of life that we had to comply with, which started with the Covid-19 pandemic we are in, has made obesity and treatment methods more talked about. Measures such as masks, social distance, social isolation, travel restrictions, closure decisions and quarantine cause a depressive mood by leaving the person more alone with himself. Accordingly, there is an increase in the number of obese people all over the world, with the contribution of deterioration in eating habits and inactivity. Due to the fact that the Covid-19 disease is more serious, especially in obese individuals, and can even cause death, the surgical treatment of obesity has become more talked about in this period. It has been scientifically proven that losing weight has positive effects not only on the lungs, but also on the immune system and many organs.

Dr. Finally, Gül Bora Makal added; “There are basically two types of surgery in obesity surgery. Surgeries that reduce the volume (tube stomach) and impair absorption (gastric bypass). Tube stomach is the most performed and first choice obesity surgery all over the world today. Its most important advantage is that it does not disrupt the normal anatomical structure. We prefer gastric bypass method mostly in obese and advanced diabetes patients. However, we decide which surgery will be performed by personal planning based on detailed history and examination findings.”
