Fiber Nutrition Affects Cancer Treatment Positively

There are many studies on the positive contribution of high-fiber foods, namely vegetables, fruits and whole wheat, in the course of cancer disease. Stating that a study for melanoma (skin cancer) patients has been published recently, Anadolu Medical Center Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. Dr. Serdar Turhal, “In this study, some of the melanoma patients treated at MD Anderson Cancer Center were given normal food, while a group of patients were given pulpy foods. It was shown that the mean disease-free survival of 37 patients observed in this way was better than 91 patients who did not receive pulpy food. It has been observed that every 5 gram increase in the amount of pulp can cause a decrease of up to 30 percent in the risk of cancer progression and death.” Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “Among these patients, a group of patients were also taking probiotic supplements. Patients taking these supplements showed less benefit from immunotherapy, a rather surprising result. While the immunotherapy response was 82 percent in patients who took only pulpy food, the response rate decreased to 59 percent in those who both took pulpy food and used probiotics.

Fiber nutrition has a positive effect on melanoma treatment

As a result, Medical Oncology Specialist Prof. said that consumption of pulpy food supports a better response in melanoma patients receiving immunotherapy. Dr. Serdar Turhal said, “The interesting results of this study led to the decision to start a multicenter study with more patients. We will monitor these results in the coming years,” he said, and drew attention to the importance of healthy nutrition.
