Almaty Airport Opened to Flights

Almaty Airport, which was closed for security reasons on the evening of January 5 during the events in Kazakhstan, was reopened to flights today. In the first phase, the airport will serve between 08:00 in the morning and 21:00 in the evening.

TAV Airports Chairman of the Executive Board Sani Şener said, “We watched with regret that the peaceful demonstrations in Kazakhstan, which has a special importance for us due to our historical and cultural ties, turned into acts of violence in the coming days, despite the positive approach of the administration. The main entrance gate of the commercial and cultural capital of the country, Almaty Airport, which we have been operating since May, has also been the target of acts of violence. In cooperation with Kazakhstani authorities, we ensured the safety of our passengers and employees. With the security forces restoring order, we started to work on reopening the airport for operation, and as of this morning, we opened the airport to flights after obtaining the necessary permits. We believe in the future of Kazakhstan, which is the largest country in Central Asia geographically and economically. With the normalization of daily life in the country, flight traffic will quickly recover,” he said.

With the start of flights at Almaty Airport, Air Astana, Flydubai, Scat, Qazakair and Nordwind airlines made their flights in the morning.

Almaty Airport, the home base of the country's flag carrier airline Air Astana, served 2021 million passengers in 6,1. Passenger traffic, which recovered quickly despite the pandemic, reached 2019 percent of 94.

Bek Air, SCAT Airlines and Qazak Air also use the airport as their bases. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus have regular direct flights between Istanbul and Almaty. Air Astana handles nearly half of the passenger traffic, while THY ranks first in cargo.
