The Transportation Master Plan Workshop, organized by Adana Metropolitan Municipality, was held at the Sheraton Hotel. Speaking at the opening of the Transportation Master Plan Workshop attended by scientists, non-governmental organizations managers, bureaucrats and guests, Adana Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Zeydan Karalar stated that one of the biggest problems in mega cities is traffic. Reminding that Adana also has unemployment, traffic, air pollution and zoning problems, Mayor Zeydan Karalar said, “We first talked to the doyens of this business and scientists to solve the traffic problem. We have started working towards our goal of making a Transportation Master Plan, but the pandemic has slowed us down. Everyone living in Adana is a stakeholder in this business and extensive public opinion surveys were conducted. This work has been tried before in Adana and could not be done. We knew that our job was difficult, but we were also aware that if we were determined, it would become achievable. After more than a year of work, we have come to these days. We're going to have a long discussion today," he said.

METRO MUST CARRY MORE PEOPLE

Reminding that the metro in Adana carries 25-30 thousand people daily, Mayor Zeydan Karalar stated that this number should be at least 250 thousand people. President Zeydan Karalar said, “If the metro carried 250 thousand people a day, approximately 200 thousand people would not use their private vehicles to go to work or shopping. This would greatly reduce the traffic problem," he said.

OVERPASS, UNDERPASS, NEW ROADS AND BRIDGES ARE VERY WELL PLANNED

President Zeydan Karalar, who stated that the places where underpasses, overpasses and new roads should be built were determined within the scope of the works, continued as follows: “We are currently doing these, but we are determining where else to be built. When you build a bridge, you provide crossing density to the opposite side, but not if you don't calculate where the traffic will flow there. It is very important to make these and similar determinations. Our expectation is that as a result of all these efforts, Adana traffic will be relieved a bit.”

PUBLIC RESEARCH CONTINUES FOR TRAM LINE

President Zeydan Karalar, who noted that the public opinion polls for the tram line are continuing, emphasized that they have completed the works for the 2nd line of the subway and said: “We have forwarded our file to our President. We are waiting for a solution to this issue. In this state, the operation of the metro does more harm than good. There is also a big problem in transportation to the new stadium. Unfortunately, after the trouble and chaos in our country, efforts are being made to reduce the damage. However, if precautions are taken before disasters and problems occur, all this chaos will not occur and all kinds of problems will be overcome with the least damage.”

WE ARE WORKING TO REDUCE THE USE OF SPECIAL VEHICLES AND TO GENERATE ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS

Explaining that the climate in Adana is suitable for the use of bicycles and that they are working to spread it, Mayor Zeydan Karalar said, “The more people we can keep away from using their personal vehicles while commuting to work, the more comfortable the traffic. For all this, we work with our valuable scientists, lecturers and non-governmental organizations, institutions and people who are the stakeholders of the transportation problem. We are walking on the right path and with the right people.”

WE ARE PLANNING THE FUTURE OF ADANA

Mentioning the zoning problem in Adana, Mayor Zeydan Karalar said that the Transportation Master Plan would not be sufficient alone, and that they were working on the zoning plan that should be carried out together, and that they were working together with all stakeholders and scientists to plan the city's 50 years and its future.

President Zeydan Karalar stated that he believes the Transportation Master Plan Workshop will yield good results.

THE FUTURE OF TRANSPORTATION IN ADANA PANEL

After the speech of President Zeydan Karalar, a panel on the Future of Transportation in Adana was held. Assoc. Dr. In the panel moderated by Fikret Zorlu, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General for Transportation İbrahim Orhan Demir and Prof. Dr. Haluk Gerçek shared his views.
