Operating with the aim of contributing to a more sustainable future, Vodafone aims to save 15 tons in pure plastic production and reduce carbon emissions by 320 tons every year by offering new Eco-SIM cards made of recycled plastic in 1.280 countries, including Turkey. That's a savings of 12 containers of plastic.
Operating with the aim of being a purpose-oriented company, Vodafone continues its environmental sustainability efforts all over the world. Vodafone, which introduced half-size SIM cards around the world last year, has now introduced new Eco-SIM cards made of recycled plastic. Eco-SIM cards, which will be available in 15 countries, including Turkey, significantly reduce the use of plastic and carbon emissions. With the use of Eco-SIM cards, Vodafone aims to save 320 tons of pure plastic and reduce carbon emissions by 1.280 tons every year. Eco-SIM cards, which will be used in Turkey in December, will gradually become widespread with the replacement of existing SIM cards.
Meltem Bakiler Şahin, Vice President of Vodafone Turkey Executive Board, said: “As Vodafone, we continue to implement sustainable projects and programs to reduce the environmental impact of our operations. In this context, we aim to completely eliminate the need for the supply of plastic SIMs. When we look at it, we see that things that seem very small can make a big impact. Although a SIM card may seem very small, it creates a huge waste recycling potential. With this awareness, we switched to half-size SIM cards in 2014 and reduced the amount of plastic used by our customers. In the upcoming period, thanks to Eco-SIM cards produced from recycled plastic, we will eliminate the need for unprocessed plastic and save on carbon emissions from new plastic production. With the transition to the Eco-SIM card, we will reduce the consumption of unprocessed plastics by 320 tons worldwide. That means savings of 12 containers of plastic.”
End the use of plastic in stores and offices
As of 2020, Vodafone has stopped the use of unnecessary plastic and disposable products in its stores and offices around the world. Vodafone also abolished the use of single-use plastic bags, stopping or restricting the use of marketing or promotional materials with plastic content, and instead turned to alternatives with low environmental impact.
“Plastic-free office” application in Vodafone Turkey
Vodafone ended the use of an average of 6 million disposable plastic products per year, with the “plastic-free office” practice implemented in all office buildings in Turkey. With the implementations initiated within the scope of the “Green Loving Red” movement, Vodafone Turkey offices use paper cups instead of plastic cups, glass bottles instead of plastic bottles, and environmentally friendly packaging instead of nylon bags. Nature-friendly and recyclable products such as porcelain and glass are preferred in the company cafeteria. Beverages are sold in recycled glasses at the cafes within the company and employees are encouraged to use environmentally friendly products. While water is sold in glass bottles at the in-house market, nature-friendly packaging is used instead of plastic bags.
