Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyerattended the ceremony held in Cumhuriyet Square due to Veterans Day.

A ceremony was held in İzmir Cumhuriyet Square due to the September 19th Veterans Day. The ceremony was attended by the Governor of İzmir, Yavuz Selim Köşger, and the Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality. Tunç Soyer, Aegean Army and Garrison Commander General Ali Sivri, İzmir Provincial Police Chief Mehmet Şahne, commanders and veterans attended. After a wreath was laid at the Atatürk Monument, a moment of silence was observed and the National Anthem was sung.

Retired Colonel Mehmet Gökmen, President of the Izmir Branch of the Turkish Combat Veterans Association, reminded that Commander-in-Chief Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was given the rank of marshal and the title of veteran on September 19, 1921 by the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) after the Sakarya Pitched Battle. Mehmet Gökmen said, “There is honor of martyrdom and veteran in our history. Citizens of the Republic of Turkey fight for their homeland, nation, flag and national anthem. The best example of this was in the War of Independence under the leadership of Atatürk, saying 'Either independence or death'. Everyone should know that no matter what, those who target the holy homeland are doomed to perish in the face of the struggle of our heroic army, security forces and patriots."

At the end of the program, the Turkish Armed Forces Band performed.
