Participation in postgraduate education in Turkey is increasing every year. While the number of students continuing their graduate studies in the 2019-2020 academic year was 297 thousand, this number reached 2020 thousand 2021 in the 343-569 academic year. Istinye University (ISU) Social Sciences Institute Director Assoc. Dr. Fahri Erenel, stating that the employment rate of postgraduate students is higher, says, "While the employment rate of postgraduate graduates is 84 percent in Turkey, this rate reaches 92 percent for doctoral graduates".
The next step for every graduate is undoubtedly to get a job. However, it is not easy for every graduate to have a job, especially in areas where competition is high. In order to stand out from their competitors and to become a sought after person, one also needs to improve oneself. Istinye University (ISU) Social Sciences Institute Director Assoc. Dr. Fahri Erenel states that companies now want to hire well-equipped and knowledgeable people, so they prefer people who have postgraduate education. Stating that the employment rate of graduate education graduates has increased, Erenel says, "While the employment rate of postgraduate graduates is 84 percent in Turkey, this rate reaches 92 percent for doctoral graduates." Looking at the data, it seems that interest in postgraduate education has increased in Turkey in recent years. While the number of students continuing their master's degree in the 2019-2020 academic year was 297 thousand, this number increased to 2020 thousand 2021 in the 343-569 academic year, and the number of students in doctoral education increased from 101 thousand 242 to 106 thousand 148.
Human capital gained importance
Istinye University Institute of Social Sciences Director Assoc. Dr. Stating that companies now pay attention to 'human capital', Erenel says:
“The element that will carry a business to the future will be the intellectual capital, which is the sum of the values created by the people working within it, the business strategies, structure, systems and processes, and the relations the company establishes with its customers and society. As a result of developments in the knowledge economy, businesses have now realized that learning is vital and thus shifted their strategic efforts from the management of tangible assets to the management of intangible, often hidden, intellectual assets. Intellectual capital; It consists of human capital, structural capital and customer capital. Human capital encompasses the knowledge, creativity, problem-solving ability, entrepreneurship and leadership abilities of business employees. What will provide these competencies is the training to be taken at universities. In order for our country to reach its 2023, 2053 and 2071 targets, we need to increase the qualified human capital that has received postgraduate education. It is not only a necessity but a necessity to increase participation in graduate and doctorate education in order to increase the number of researchers and entrepreneurs involved in research and development and innovation studies. The way to be among the top 10 economies of the world is through these trainings.”
Employability increases as the level of education increases
Erenel stated that, according to OECD data, employability increases with the increase in education level in Turkey and continues as follows:
“According to the 2018 OECD report, based on 2020 data; While the OECD average for adults aged 25-34 who receive postgraduate education is 13.1 percent, the average for Turkey is 2.05 percent. In doctoral education, the difference is extremely small. The OECD average is 1.17 percent, the average for Turkey is 0.43 percent. Again, according to the same report, it is observed that employability increases with the increase in the level of education in Turkey. 25 percent of young adults aged 34-52 with less than secondary education, 61 percent of those in secondary education and about 72 percent of those in tertiary education are employed. The average employment rate of higher education graduates is 85 percent in the OECD. According to another analysis, while the employment rate of postgraduate graduates is 84 percent in Turkey, this rate reaches 92 percent for doctoral graduates. All these data show that postgraduate education is a necessity in every aspect.”
New master's and doctorate programs at ISU
Stating that new master's and doctoral programs are opened at ISU for the first time in the fall semester of 2021, Erenel says:
“With the aim of raising researcher, innovative human capital that produces, uses, criticizes and solves problems with a productive way of thinking that our country needs in every field, graduate programs are opened and conducted in our universities. As İstinye University, we aim to contribute to the training of well-equipped individuals with the programs we will open this year. In the fall of 2021, our new master's and doctoral programs will also start education. Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Sciences Institutes, which educate individuals who follow the current literature, Computer Engineering (with / without Thesis), Architectural Design (with Thesis), Nutrition and Dietetics (Thesis / Non-Thesis), Sports Physiotherapy (Thesis) graduate programs, together with Health Management, Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Molecular Oncology, Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering doctoral programs will take students for the first time. Applications continue until September 20.
