Mercedes-Benz Trucks is firmly advancing towards its goal of developing the battery-electric eEconic for municipal operations through a series of intensive tests. The test engineers' focus in the trials is the safety, performance and durability of the vehicle. eEconic also needs to prove itself in battery and powertrain tests in summer and winter. The vehicle is also subjected to additional trials such as noise measurements, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and test drives on rough roads. Once the tests are complete, eEconic will move on to the next step, customer trials in real-life conditions.

eEconic's vehicle architecture benefits from Daimler Trucks' global platform strategy. The low-floor truck is based on eActros, which was launched in the digital world at the end of June for heavy-duty distribution operations. That's why the eEconic's core specifications are largely the same as those of the eActros. With its garbage collection vehicle configuration, the eEconic will be able to complete the vast majority of Econic's typical garbage collection routes in the future without the need for on-road charging, and will be locally CO2 neutral and quiet.

Head of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks, Dr. Ralf Forcher; “We're putting the eEconic through an extremely broad series of tests. The results we have achieved so far have shown that our concept is on the right track. The eEconic is ideal for use as a garbage collector. The high stop-and-go driving rate, reliable planning, daily routes of 100 km on average, and the ability to charge the batteries at customer warehouses make it an ideal type of use for the duty profile of the battery-electric low-floor truck.” said.

Same architecture, different task profile: eEconic based on eActros

With a technically permissible maximum laden mass of 27 tonnes, the eEconic will first be available in a garbage collection vehicle configuration with a 6×2/NLA wheel arrangement. As with the eActros, the technological heart of the eEconic is the drive unit, which is an electric axle with two integrated electric motors and a two-speed gearbox. The battery of the eEconic series production model will be equipped with three battery packs, each with an energy capacity of approximately 105 kWh. Both liquid-cooled engines produce 330 kW of continuous engine power and 400 kW of peak performance. In addition, during predictive driving, electrical energy can be recovered through recuperation. This is a great advantage especially for stop-start operations during garbage collection. When the daily routes are completed, the batteries of the electric truck can be charged up to 160 kW at fast charging stations where it can be kept in customer warehouses.

Developed for municipal operations: Safe, efficient, ergonomic and environmentally friendly

The proven features of traditional Econic that are highly sought after by customers are also part of eEconic. For example, the deep panoramic windshield of the "DirectVision Cockpit" with its low seat position provides the driver with direct eye contact with other road users and provides an extremely good overview of road traffic. In addition; The low entry and exit of the spacious driver's cabin, which offers space for up to four people, provides an ergonomic advantage. Especially in urban use, the eEconic stands out not only with its locally CO2 neutral propulsion system, but also with its lower early morning noise emission.

A holistic ecosystem including advisory service

To assist transport companies at every stage on the path to eMobility, Mercedes-Benz Trucks has introduced eEconic, just like eActros, which, in addition to the advice and services it offers, includes a set of digital solutions aimed at increasing the vehicle's capacity utilization and optimizing the total cost of ownership. designed to be part of a rich eco-system. For example, using a customer's existing route plans, it is possible to create a highly realistic and meaningful usage profile for electric trucks. This e-Consultancy service not only includes the electrification of the warehouse, but also covers all questions related to the planning of the charging infrastructure and connection to the electricity grid, making the necessary applications and installation, if the customer requests it.

Electrify the product range with battery and fuel cell propulsion systems

Daimler Truck AG has set itself the goal of introducing new vehicles that are CO2039 neutral only while driving (“Tank to wheel”) in Europe, Japan and North America by 2. Daimler Truck AG plans to have series production Battery Electric Vehicles in its vehicle portfolio by 2022 in its main sales regions in Europe, the United States and Japan. The company wants to enrich its range by adding mass-produced hydrogen-based fuel cell vehicles to its vehicle portfolio by 2027. The ultimate goal is to make CO2050-neutral transport on the roads a reality by 2.
