IMM is also activating the last rail system construction site, whose tender was held and stopped in the past. Work has started on the Mahmutbey-Esenyurt Metro, which is the continuation of the Mecidiyeköy-Mahmutbey Metro. The first phase of the line, which will serve more than 3 million people in the west of the city, is planned to be put into service in 7.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), which broke a world record with a total of 10 rail system projects, continues its rail system investments without interruption. Project and site delivery problems are being solved in Mahmutbey-Esenyurt Metro, which is one of the lines whose tender was made and stopped in 2017.

Stating that Mahmutbey-Esenyurt Metro is one of the lines that they took over when they took office in 2019, IMM Rail System Department Head Pelin Alpkökin said that they started working on the last metro line from the past.

KABATAŞ-ESENYURT WITHOUT SHIPPING

Stating that the Mahmutbey-Esenyurt Metro is this very important project that appeals to the west side of the city, Alpkökin said, “This line, which is the continuation of the Mecidiyeköy-Mahmutbey Metro, is from Mecidiyeköy. Kabataşbecause it will extend to KabataşIt will be a continuation of Mahmutbey Metro. When we finish all these projects KabataşAn Istanbulite who takes the train from Istanbul will have the opportunity to have a fast, comfortable and safe journey to Esenyurt.”

MANUFACTURING STARTS ON AUGUST 2

Alpkökin said that with the Eurobond (bond) issuance at the end of last year, they allocated a budget of 220 million euros for the Mahmutbey-Esenyurt Metro and that they started to work intensively on the project since then:

“Unfortunately, we worked on redesigning and optimizing the projects of the line, which was tendered in the past, as there were no feasible and detailed projects. At the same time, there were also problems regarding the delivery of the site to the contractor, which is very important for us. The tender for the line was made without any of these being resolved. Now we are solving all these problems. We will start the production of Mahmutbey-Esenyurt Metro on August 2.”

IN THE FIRST STAGE, 7 KM WILL BE DONE

Pelin Alpkökin stated that they will start to build the 7 km section between Mahmutbey and Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Hospital in the first place of the line, which they took over from the previous administration as it had never been started, and said, “We are planning to complete this section in 2024. Then we will continue our metro until Esenyurt. We think it is a very important project for the more than 3 million inhabitants in the west of the city who do not have metro access. At the same time, it will be a rail system with high integration with our other ongoing metros. I am sure that from the moment it opens, there will be a very intense demand for travel,” he said.
