The consortium, consisting of Alstom Transport Mexico, Bombardier Transportation México, Gami Ingeniería e instalaciones and Construcciones Urales Procesos Industriales, will produce trains for Mexico's Maya railway project, a large-scale intercity rail project aimed at transforming sustainable mobility in the country. The total value of the contract is approximately €1,3 billion (over US$31 billion). Alstom-Bombardier's share is approximately 1 billion Euros.
The winning proposal was announced by the National Tourism Promotion Fund (Fonatur) on 26 May, after its technical committee approved the consortium's operational, technical and economic proposals. The factors that determined Fonatur's decision to choose the winning consortium were cost, degree of integration, delivery times and design proposals.
“We are extremely proud to have been selected to supply the full signaling system alongside the Tren Maya, a train for Mexico, built in Mexico. The design of the three types of trains – Xiinbal, Janal and P'tal – is unique to Mexico and inspired by the Mayan culture, where the lines, speed and beauty of the majestic jaguar were the inspiration for the train. “The production of Tren Maya will start immediately with the Mexican worker after the signing of the contract,” said Maite Ramos, Managing Director of Alstom México.
Led by Alstom-Bombardier, the consortium will be responsible for the design, manufacture and commissioning of the 42 X'trapolis train, as well as the full signaling system and more than 1.500 km of roadside equipment, including the design, supply and installation of ETCS onboard technology. Leveraging the entire Alstom portfolio, including ETCS, locking, traffic management and telecommunications systems. In addition, the consortium is responsible for the construction of maintenance shops and garages and the after-sales service of system equipment.
Alstom's new X'trapolis model for Tren Maya will leverage the group's manufacturing and engineering potential to produce an up-to-date, competitive and reliable train based on trains that have already proven their worth. The X'trapolis train is a solid platform with a modular interior – all configurations are possible from the same lightweight body. So far, 5500 X'trapolis cars have been ordered around the world. This train will also use the input and expertise of former Bombardier, most notably the lightweight Flexx Eco bogie designed for a maximum speed of 176 km/h. More than 8.300 units of the same bogie model have been ordered or delivered to date in Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Norway, Germany and particularly the UK.
The consortium will offer X'trapolis in three different configurations: the first in a flexible and comfortable standard service installation (Xiinbal); second place (Janal), which prioritizes restaurant carts; and the last (P'atal) in the long-distance traverse configuration. All versions offer passengers ample legroom in their seats and plenty of room to move. Passengers will have more than enough room to store their luggage, with roof racks borrowed from Alstom's intercity train Coradia and vertical shelves in each carriage. Passengers with reduced mobility will have full freedom of movement as the floor is flat throughout. At X'Trapolis, passengers will benefit from high-performance HVAC and large windows with breathtaking views of the Maya region.
Alstom is the main supplier of onboard and roadside ETCS equipment, which represents 70% of the world's rail systems in service and 18.000 kilometers of roads worldwide, providing significant benefits in terms of maintenance cost savings, safety, reliability, punctuality and traffic capacity.
Tren Maya is a 1.525-kilometer comprehensive mobility project that aims to develop and connect the southeast of the country with the Yucatán Peninsula and will be a major boost to mobility and economic growth in this part of Mexico. Overall, the project will create 4.500 direct and 7.500 indirect jobs, which will create significant economic development for the community. Alstom will manufacture the 42 trains at its Ciudad Sahagún Hidalgo facility.
