Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Op.Dr.Aslı Alay gave information about frequent urination during pregnancy. During pregnancy; Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, weakness, frequent urination, constipation, cramps are among the complaints experienced by many women. These symptoms are mostly inherent to pregnancy. However, every complaint in pregnancy should be questioned carefully, sometimes problems that appear physiological can be a symptom of serious diseases.

Frequent Urination During Pregnancy

Significant changes occur in the urinary system with pregnancy. Following the first months of pregnancy; There are some physiological changes in the kidney, bladder, and urine-carrying ducts. Enlargements are observed in the kidneys and ducts (ureter) that carry urine to the bladder. The most important reason for this growth and enlargement is the accumulation of urine that cannot flow easily due to the mechanical pressure of the growing mother's womb, and the increase in blood flow to the kidneys. In addition, progesterone hormone, which increases during pregnancy, contributes to the enlargement of urinary ducts.

Enlargement of kidney and urinary canals during pregnancy is an important cause of increased urinary tract infections.

From the 4th month of pregnancy, the blood flow to the kidneys increases by 70-75%. This increase lowers blood urea and creatinine levels. In the last months of pregnancy, urea, uric acid and creatinine levels reach pre-pregnancy levels. In the case of preeclampsia known as pregnancy poisoning, an increase in uric acid values is observed. However, pre-pregnancy values must be known in order to make an accurate comparison.

The conclusion we will draw here is; Pregnancy planning should be done with pre-pregnancy preparation and physician control.

There is a significant change in water and salt metabolism during pregnancy. There is an admirable balance. A tendency to salt excretion occurs due to the increase in blood flow and the dilation effect of the urinary ducts created by the progesterone hormone during pregnancy. However, a great balance comes into play and absorption increases with increasing salt-holding hormones. And salt loss is prevented.

Frequent urination during pregnancy is a problem expressed by all expectant mothers. With the contribution of the mechanical effect created by the growth of the mother's womb, the time spent in the toilet increases from the 3rd month of pregnancy. The expectant mother wakes up with the urge to urinate during the night. There is no average numerical value for the frequency of urination. These splits, especially at night, can cause fatigue in the expectant mother.

Causes of increased urine frequency:

  • The most important reason is a faster blood flow and more work of the kidneys,
  • Increasing blood flow to the kidneys with pregnancy hormones,
  • The pressure exerted by the growing mother's womb on the bladder.

Things to remember:

Frequent urination is a physiological consequence of pregnancy. This situation, which starts from the 3rd month of pregnancy, may decrease after the 4th month. The expectant mother is 16-26. While having a more comfortable period between weeks, complaints increase again in the last 3 months. Because your baby has descended into the birth canal in the last month of pregnancy and has increased pressure on the bladder.

In case of burning in the urine, groin pain, bloody urination, you should definitely consult your doctor. Because these complaints can be a symptom of serious diseases and infections related to kidney and urinary tract. Complaints such as thirst, weakness and exhaustion added to frequent urination can also be a symptom of diabetes. Fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels of all pregnant women should be checked and the 24-28th day of pregnancy. Sugar loading test should be done between weeks.

SUGGESTIONS

Especially for women who continue their active working life, frequent urination is a condition that affects their social life. Every expectant mother should be informed that the situation is normal.

When it comes to toilet needs, it should never hold urine.

While urinating, you should lean forward slightly so that the bladder is completely emptied.

The expectant mother should be recommended to drink at least 2,5 liters of water a day. In addition, consumption of tea and coffee with diuretic effects should be reduced. The expectant mother should drink milk, buttermilk, kefir and water. In addition, urinary incontinence is a common condition during pregnancy. Kegel exercises that will strengthen the pelvic muscles should be taught to the expectant mother and should be recommended to do it at frequent intervals. Regular Kegel exercises both facilitate birth and reduce urinary incontinence. It should not be forgotten that Kegel exercises should be started from the first days of pregnancy. And it should be continued in the postpartum period.

Our pregnant women can apply practices that are very dangerous for both their own bodies and their babies to reduce the frequency of urination.

Wrongs:

  1. Restriction of fluid intake
  2. Retention of urine

It is a situation that should definitely not be done and increases the risk of urinary tract infection. Every woman should be warned and informed about this.
