Istanbul Airport is the international airport serving the city of Istanbul in Turkey. Located on the European side of the city, between the villages of Tayakadin and Akpınar on the Black Sea coast, the airport was opened on October 29, 2018. When all stages are completed, it will be able to serve with an area of 76,5 km2, with two terminals that can be increased to 200 million passengers per year, with six independent runways. Although the project name of the airport was determined as Istanbul New Airport while it was under construction, its name was announced as Istanbul Airport when it was completed.

The Cengiz, Mapa, Limak, Kolin, Kalyon Joint Venture Group (OGG), formed by İGA investors, won the tender for the new airport on May 3, 2013, with a bid of 22,152 billion euros, the highest bid in the history of the republic. The shareholding structure of İGA as of the end of 2019 is as follows: 35% Kalyon Aerospace and Construction Inc., 25% Cengiz İnşaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş., 20% Mapa İnşaat ve Ticaret A.Ş. and 20% Limak Construction Industry and Trade Inc. After the tender, the foundation of the project was laid on 7 June 2014.

The news about the inadequacy of working conditions and worker deaths in the airport construction were reflected to the public from time to time through the opposition press. The allegations that the deaths were hidden from the public and that 2018 workers lost their lives as of February 400 forced the Ministry of Labor to make a statement. In the statement of the Ministry, it was stated that the number of workers who died was 27. In September 2018, the gendarmerie intervened with Toma and tear gas to the protest organized by airport workers demanding improvement of conditions. The İnşaat-İş Union claimed that nearly 600 workers were detained after the protest.

Claiming the density and capacity shortage of Istanbul Atatürk Airport, the Council of Ministers decided to construct a new airport. On August 13, 2012, the first step was taken to realize the project by selecting the region.

How was the tender process?

The tender for the New Airport was opened on January 24, 2013 and ended on May 3, 2013. TAV, Alarko, IC, Limak, Makyol and Varyap Holding participated in the tender for which a twenty percent equity requirement was stipulated. Airport operation period was fixed as 25 years within the conditions. The opinion was expressed by experts that the preparation of the tender was realized in the short term for a global scale project. Sabancı Holding gave up participating in the tender.

New Airport Tender is the largest investment in Turkey historic day May 3, 2013 at 10.00:22 Esenboğa International Airport was held at Social Facilities. Fraport company made the highest bid in the first round. Cengiz, Mapa, Limak, Kolin, Kalyon Joint Venture Group (OGG) won the tender with 152 billion 6 million Euros. 96 billion 26 million euros, including VAT, came to the state from the 142-hour XNUMX-round tender.

After the Cengiz, Mapa, Limak, Kolin, Kalyon Joint Venture Group (OGG) won the tender held on May 3, 2013, the contract was signed on May 80, 20, the 2013th anniversary of DHMI.

According to the EIA Report announced about the project, the concern that the majority of the project will be built on the existing forest, the ecological system in this region will be damaged. The fact that the lake areas to be dried in the construction zone will lose their characteristics of wetlands was one of the most criticized issues.

Cargo / Logistics Center; For the first phase of the project, it will be established on an area of 1,4 million square meters, and will reach a size of 200.000 million square meters with the additional area of 1,6 square meters to be built in the following phases. As a first step towards these goals, a pre-protocol was signed with DHL Express on March 4, 2015 for an area of 20 thousand square meters where cargo operations will be carried out. In addition, many important domestic and foreign companies serving in cargo, logistics and temporary storage areas are also included in this project. The Cargo / Logistics Center will serve with an annual air cargo tonnage capacity of 2,5 million in the first phase, and this capacity is planned to be increased to 5,5 million tons annually with the second and third phases. Parking positions are located in front of temporary storage areas for this center, where 29 wide-body cargo aircraft and optionally 38 cargo aircraft can approach at the same time, from these points to passenger terminals and remote parking areas, by using air-side service tunnels passing under runways and taxiways, A fast, flawless operational infrastructure that will not be affected by aircraft traffic and adverse weather conditions is designed. Temporary storage areas, agency buildings, customs offices and all cargo / logistics operations will be located together in the Cargo City to be established within Istanbul Airport. There will be service points such as banking services, cafes and restaurants, dry cleaning, hairdresser, PTT, prayer areas, veterinarian, health center, test laboratories for the personnel of all companies that will work in the Cargo City and also to facilitate the work of those who will use this area for business purposes.
