IMM Statistics Office achieved striking results in its earthquake research. 72,1 percent of the respondents do not have an earthquake bag. 40,1 percent are unaware of the 'Triangle of Life' concept. 23 percent, what to do during an earthquake; 52,6 percent do not know the emergency meeting areas at all. 22,4 percent think their house will be destroyed in an earthquake of seven or more. The rate of those who think that there will be no damage to the building they live in is 13,5 percent. 62,5 percent of those who said that they would move to a safer house if their buildings were reported to be rotten, 80 percent of those who said they would continue to live in the same house cited financial insufficiency as the justification.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Istanbul Statistics Office conducted a research to measure the public perception and preparations for the earthquake, one of the most important problems of Istanbul. “Earthquake in Istanbul: Perception and Attitude Research” revealed very striking results. The research was prepared by using a computer-assisted telephone survey method, between 5-7 November 2020, by talking to 769 residents of Istanbul randomly.

Insufficient funds force to sit in the rotten building

Participants in the research said, "What would you do if your building was given a report of decay or what kind of process do you think would go through?" The question was asked. 62,5 percent of the participants stated that they will move to a safer house. 80 percent of the participants who said that they would continue to stay at home even if their building was given a report of rot, cited financial insufficiency as a justification. 53,2 percent of homeowners and 71,2 percent of tenants stated that they would move to a safer home.

68,6 percent of the participants, who stated that they would continue to stay where they lived due to financial insufficiency, stated that they lived in buildings before the 1999 Gölcük earthquake. While 59,6 percent of the participants belonging to the lower-middle and lower socio-economic group said they would move to a safer housing, this rate was 72,3 percent in the upper-middle and upper socio-economic group. Among the participants belonging to the lower-middle and lower socio-economic groups, 82,1 percent of the participants who stated that they will stay in the same building attribute this to financial insufficiency, while this rate is 62,6 percent in the upper-middle and upper socio-economic group.

23 percent do not know what to do during an earthquake

53,5 percent of the participants stated that they knew what to do during the earthquake, 25,2 percent had limited information, and 21,3 percent did not know what to do. 15 percent of the 39-55,6 age group and 40 percent of those aged 50,9 and over stated that they knew what to do. This rate was 51,4 percent for the participants belonging to the lower-middle and lower socio-economic group, and 60,7 percent for the participants with upper-middle and upper socio-economic level.

40,1 percent unaware of the 'Triangle of Life' concept

40,1 percent of the participants stated that they do not know the concept of the life triangle. The proportion of those who know the concept of the Life Triangle is 15 percent in the 39-65,5 age group, 40 percent over 53,3 years old. To the participants who know the triangle of life, "Have you determined the life triangle areas for all residents in the house?" 59,1 percent of the participants stated that they determined an area. 56,3 percent of the participants belonging to the lower-middle and lower socio-economic group and 71,9 percent of the participants with upper-middle and upper socio-economic level said they knew the triangle of life.

72,1 percent do not have an earthquake bag         

While only 27,9 percent of the participants have an earthquake bag, 72,1 percent do not have an earthquake bag. 25,6 percent of the participants belonging to the lower-middle and lower socio-economic group, and 35,8 percent of the participants with upper-middle and upper socio-economic level stated that they have earthquake bags.

Yover 52,6, do not know the emergency meeting area

52,6 percent of the participants do not know the emergency meeting area in their region. 15 percent of the 39-47,9 age group and 40 percent of those aged 46,9 and over know the earthquake assembly area. There was no significant difference between socio-economic groups in this question.

22,4 percent think their house will be destroyed in an earthquake of seven or more.

If a seven or more earthquake occurs, 22,4 percent of the participants stated that the building they lived in would be demolished, 16,7 percent would receive heavy damage, 26,5 percent moderate damage, 20,9 percent less damage. did. Those who thought that the building they lived in would not be damaged remained at 13,5 percent.

Before the 1999 Gölcük earthquake, 22,4 percent of the participants who lived in the buildings stated that their building would be heavily damaged and 32,3 percent thought that they would collapse.

43,4 percent of the homeowners and 25,4 percent of the tenants stated that they thought the house they lived in would receive little or no damage. 41,2 percent of the participants belonging to the lower-middle and lower socio-economic group and 32,2 percent of the participants belonging to the upper-middle and middle socio-economic group stated that they think their house will be heavily damaged or destroyed.

Methodology

This research was prepared by using the Computer Aided Telephone Questionnaire (CATI) method by talking to 5 residents of Istanbul randomly between 7-2020 November 769.

The research includes 8 categories based on education, profession and income level from socio-economic status (SES) level to upper (A +, A), upper-middle (B +, B), lower-middle (C +, C) and lower (D and E) evaluated according to their status. 7,7 percent of respondents were E, 27,3 percent D, 30,9 percent C, 11,2 percent C +, 10,7 percent B, 5,7 percent B +, percent 4,9 percent were people residing in the neighborhoods with A, 1,6 percent in the neighborhood with A + socio-economic status.

While 60,2 percent of the participants are between the ages of 18-40, 39,8 percent are in the age group over 40. While 49,6 percent of the participants are women, 50,4 percent are men.
