Istanbul Airport Receives Zero Waste Certificate

Istanbul Airport, where IGA has meticulously implemented its environment and sustainability policies, became the first airport to receive a 'Zero Waste Certificate' within the scope of the 'Zero Waste' project implemented by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization with the aim of preventing waste and using resources more efficiently.

IGA, which designs its works in line with the principles of sustainable development, continues to set an example for the aviation industry with its activities carried out in the field of environment and sustainability at Istanbul Airport, which it has turned into a global transfer center with its operational success. Waste management infrastructure, establishing a system of effective waste is separated as the source of HDI, he continued his studies at Istanbul airport in Turkey as a result of 'Document area of the Zero Waste has managed to become the first airport.

Within the scope of the 'Zero Waste' project implemented with the sustainable environment and sustainable development understanding of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Istanbul Airport was awarded the No.1 'Zero Waste Certificate in the aviation industry.

What is the Zero Waste Project?

The disposal of wastes without being evaluated in the recycling and recovery process causes serious resource losses in terms of both material and energy. 'Zero Waste' is a target defined as a waste prevention approach that includes the prevention of waste, the more efficient use of resources, the reduction of the amount of waste generated, the establishment of an effective collection system, and the recycling of waste.

Within the scope of the "Zero Waste" project in order to prevent air, water and soil pollution that threatens all living things, especially issues such as the depletion of natural resources and climate change; It is aimed to prevent or minimize waste generation by reviewing the causes of waste generation, and if waste is generated, it is aimed to be separated at its source and recycled. In the project, it has been started with the principle of placing the existing systems on a more regular and applicable basis.

'Zero Waste' studies at Istanbul Airport

Considering sustainability as the most fundamental value of our future, IGA applies its works that will set an example for the aviation industry, meticulously at every stage of Istanbul Airport, from the design to the construction phase, from the construction phase to the operation process. Based on this idea, at Istanbul Airport, where the "Zero Waste" approach is seen as a critical success factor, all activities are carried out in the light of international standards and guidelines such as IFC (International Finance Corporation) Standards, Equator Principles, Turkish Environmental Legislation.

In the 'Zero Waste' principle approach, the wastes of all parties, including IGA, operating at Istanbul Airport, where sorting at the source is of great importance for the solution of the waste problem, is divided into five different categories as paper-cardboard, packaging, glass, organic and domestic waste. Thus, at Istanbul Airport, where the entire waste management infrastructure is designed to provide recycling, all operating companies have signed the Zero Waste Declaration of Istanbul Airport under the leadership of IGA, which leads the aviation industry.

Containers are placed in the areas where waste is generated at the airport in 5 different categories: paper-cardboard, packaging, glass, organic and domestic, and the waste is separated at its source in these areas. The wastes collected by the waste collection vehicles suitable for the type of waste are separated in the Solid Waste Facility and separated to be sent to recovery and storage. In the same direction, all stakeholders at the airport support the 'Zero Waste' project and collect their wastes in 5 different categories and give them to IGA. In this way, stakeholders also contribute to the 'Zero Waste' target.

Target future generations to clean, sophisticated Turkey and leave a livable world ...

Kadri Samsunlu, Chairman and General Manager of IGA Airport Operations, who made evaluations regarding the 'Zero Waste Certificate' as a result of the works carried out at Istanbul Airport; “We design all processes at Istanbul Airport in accordance with our environmental and sustainability policies. We aim to achieve maximum savings in terms of Zero Waste Principles. 100 tons of waste is produced per day at Istanbul Airport, 30% of this, that is, 30 tons of waste is sent to recycling. According to the data obtained through the 'Electronic Environmental Information System' of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, in terms of the 'Zero Waste' strategy, 1.310.000 tons less carbon dioxide has been emitted since the airport was opened and 49.500 tons less fuel has been used. 44.217.000 kilowatt less energy was consumed, resulting in savings by using 1175 kilos less raw material. What we do for the environment and sustainability is not limited to these. With the Artwist Project, we created a total of 100 artworks from 39 tons of waste generated from the airport construction through upcycling. We were entitled to receive LEED Gold certification by the American Green Building Council, and thus Istanbul Airport main terminal building was registered as the world's largest LEED certified building. "Are You Aware?" Which aims to raise awareness in the society about the environmental effects of garbage and the importance of recycling. We organized the photography and video contest in cooperation with the Protect Your Garbage Foundation. Within the scope of 'Environmental Awareness', we ensured the implementation of the community based recycling project "Kollekt" at Istanbul Airport. Finally, we are very happy that we are the first airport to receive a 'Zero Waste Certificate' as an example for the aviation industry. This success motivates us for bigger goals. I would like to draw the gold now, all these studies intrinsically clean for future generations, is located in Turkey and we developed a desire to leave a livable world. As an environmentally friendly airport, we will continue our work by contributing to the environment we live in, our country and the world in line with this goal. " used the expressions.
