El Capitan is a rock formation found in Yosemite National Park. The formation is located on the north side of Yosemite Valley and ends on the west side. The formation consisting of monolith granite is 900m high. It is visited by rock climbers all over the world. El Capitan rock is the largest mass of granite found on the ground surface.

The formation was named "El Capitan" by Mariposa Battalion after its discovery in 1851. El Capitán (captain, meaning leader) is translated from its local language name, which is "To-to-kon oo-lah" or "To-tock-ah-noo-lah".

Alex Honnold became the first person to climb El Capitan with a free solo method on June 3, 2017. The climb, which started at 5:32 local time and lasted 3 hours 56 minutes, inspired the 2018 documentary Free Solo.
