Historic Basalt Stones Found in Diyarbakır Train Station

Historic Basalt Stones Found in Diyarbakır Train Station: The basalt stones that were uncovered during the restoration work at the Diyarbakır Railway Station completely changed the project.
The basalt stones that were discovered during the excavation works at the Diyarbakır Train Station completely changed the project. Basalt stones began to be laid in the front garden of the station, which has been landscaped. The stones are estimated to be 100 years old.
The Republic of Turkey State Railways (TCDD) by the Diyarbakir Station opened in 1935 in the place of the excavations found during restoration work on historic basalt stones are under 60 centimeters. After the restoration team informed, Bergama started to be laid with basalt stones in the front garden of the station, which was planned to be laid with the decision of the Protection Board. The stones, which are also suitable for the historical structure of the station, are estimated to have been there for 100 years.
“It came out 60 centimeters below the ground”
Remzi Kaymak, Senior Engineer of Agriculture, who is engaged in restoration and landscaping works, stated that when they started working, the ground was asphalt and when they came under 60 centimeters of asphalt, they encountered basalt stones and said, “We met with the Governorship and Culture Directorate. We made a project change when the stones came out. After passing the approval of the Conservation Board, we started to apply. There will be seating in front of the station. It will be a place where incoming passengers can rest. We removed these stones, washed them, laid them again. We make joints between the stones completely by hand. We are considering finishing in November. We did something like this so that it fits the historical structure of the Diyarbakır Station. ”
TCDD 54 Real Estate Construction Supervisor Murat Aktaş, on the other hand, noted that the station was in a former condition and that minor repairs were made. In 2014, we maintained and renovated 22 staff lodgings. In 2015, we completed the Diyarbakır Train Station in accordance with its essence, and the Cultural Heritage Protection Board was approved. Later, the landscaping started in front of the Diyarbakır Train Station, which was incomplete. Actually, we thought this as Bergama stone. But after the excavation, when our basalt stone specific to Diyarbakır came out, we gave up the Bergama stone. We presented this basalt stone, which is unique to Diyarbakır, to the protection committee because the building is also historical. The Board also found fit. There are currently operations on this basalt stone. Our masters are working in the system called Horasan lime. We use this lime to prevent the stone from playing because of the incoming and outgoing vehicles. ”
