118 million people used Marmaray: Transport Minister Binali Yıldırım, who said that 118 million people have used Marmaray so far, stated that they have not yet completed their route studies for Kanal Istanbul.
Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Binali Yıldırım, stated that Marmaray carried 118 million passengers and said, "The passage of vehicles from Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge has decreased by 12 percent." Yıldırım also used the expressions “We have not completed the work on the route yet” for the Canal Istanbul Project. The 2016 budget of the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, the General Directorate of Highways, the Information Technologies and Communications Authority (BTK) and the General Directorate of Civil Aviation was discussed in the Parliamentary Plan and Budget Commission. Yıldırım gave the following information about the ministry's work:
235 BILLION PROJECT: The total number of projects of the Ministry is 3 thousand 705. Total project amount is 235 billion 591 million TL. 126 billion 168 million TL projects have been realized so far. The remaining projects cost 109 billion 423 million TL.
118 MILLION PEOPLE USED: 118 million people have used Marmaray to date. This is more than 7 times the population of Istanbul. Vehicle passage through the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge has decreased by 12 percent. This is a concrete indicator of how much the project contributed to public transportation.
