Russia tests gas-powered motor locomotive

Russia is testing the gas-powered locomotive: Russia claims to produce the world's first gas-powered locomotive.

Russia has developed a locomotive with a gas-powered engine, which they call TEM19 locomotive. This locomotive uses liquefied natural gas and is expected to be a low-cost engine, as the maintenance costs will be reduced as well as the reduction in fuel costs. Now the test period has reached the locomotive. The test facility will start at the Egorshinoe warehouse in the Sverdlosvks region of Russia.

The locomotive was designed and built by the Russian Institute for Research, Design and Technological Studies, and was undertaken by Bryansk Engineering Plant, a subsidiary of Transmashholding. Since it uses natural gas, it will be less environmentally friendly than diesel engines, since there will be less polluting gas emissions.
