Although we have built the second oldest subway in the world, Rail Systems have unfortunately been neglected for a long time in our country from the 1940s to the 1990s. The rail system, as well as the developed metropolises of the world, is not yet sufficient in Istanbul and the disruption in the integration of public transport has always been missing in Istanbul, a metropolitan city.
In the last 20 year, public transportation, especially with the development of subway and light metro projects gained speed, the development of rail systems was taken into consideration, but when we think with the growth capacity, it was seen that the studies were insufficient. Rail systems and metro serve as an indispensable public transportation means of economic, safe, fast and comfortable transportation in important cities of the world. Rail systems should be developed and turned into the backbone of public transportation.
Istanbul, one of the largest metropolises in the world, is growing day by day and its population is known as 15 million. In recent years, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has increased the existing metro and light metro km length with the projects it has made to rail systems, and with the existing and ongoing lines, 2015 has announced its yearly rail system target as total 230 mileage. In our country, with the aim to reach the rail system line in 2023 with a total length of 641, the municipalities and the central government have already started investments in the rail system.
As a result of these efforts, the 17-kilometer-long Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality will open on August 22. Kadıköy-Kartal Metro and projects to be carried out thereafter will offer metro services, which are a more comfortable, safe and fast transportation in our cities, for the use of our people.
Ensuring efforts to increase domestic technology and product contribution in rail systems and subway works should be considered as an important opportunity and opportunity in terms of development of our country, increasing employment and decreasing our current deficit. We see this path as an important opportunity in the development of our country's science-technology and industry, and we see the synergy that the universities, industry and NGOs will create as a starting point for our development and the place we deserve among the nations of the world.
