Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and TCDD to cooperate for Izmir Bay for the second time

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and TCDD, which works together to bring the 80-kilometer rail system on the Aliağa - Menderes line to Izmir, will cooperate for the second time for the Izmir Bay.

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, which wants to open a circulation channel in the north of the bay and to prevent shallowness by cleaning the mouths of the creeks, and TCDD, which aims to increase its capacity by expanding the port, have come to an important point in their work for months. TCDD signed a contract with the firm that will provide consultancy services for the preparation of the EIA report and the EIA decisions within the scope of the Izmir Bay and Izmir Port Rehabilitation Project and the process has started. The officials of İZSU, TCDD and DLH, who came together for this new cooperation that started in the Gulf, exchanged views on the studies and methods to be carried out. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu also attended the meeting at the General Directorate of IZSU.

Stating that the Great Bay Project is directly related to the survival of the inner bay of İzmir, Kocaoğlu said, “Alluvium flows from streams to the Gulf. These alluviums are increasingly shallower and filling the bay. We have seriously revised the Grand Canal Project, which started with more than 20 years of work, with works such as cleaning and additional line construction for the last two years. With the dredging ship that will start to serve at the end of the summer, we will ensure that the bay is continuously dredged and the incoming alluvium is eliminated by deepening the mouths and certain parts of the Izmir Bay. In addition, the circulation channel to be opened on the northern axis of the Gulf will increase the quality of the water and bring vitality to the Gulf ”.

Mayor Kocaoğlu also noted that they have been working with Dokuz Eylül University Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology for the last 4 years to form the scientific basis of this project, adding that the port is losing blood every day due to the inability of heavy tonnage ships, and the Izmir economy will strengthen with the increase in depth. TCDD officials also gave information about the work to be done at the port. Company officials who will provide consultancy services within the scope of the tender opened by TCDD also attended the meeting.
