Where is Sakıp Sabancı Museum?

Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum is an art museum that houses a rich collection of calligraphy and paintings, and hosts the works of many famous artists with temporary exhibitions. Opened to visitors in 2002, the museum serves in the Atlı Köşk in Emirgan, one of the oldest settlements of the Bosphorus in Istanbul.

He has managed to attract international attention in recent years with his exhibitions "Picasso in Istanbul" and "Grand Master of Sculpture Rodin in Istanbul". These and similar exhibitions won the Museum Director Nazan Olcer the Istanbul Tourism Award in the event category.

The history of the mansion

The first owners of the mansion, which was built by Italian architect Edouard De Nari in 1927, were the Egyptian Khedive family. The villa, which was used as a summer residence for many years, served as the Montenegro Embassy for a short time. The mansion, which was purchased by Hacı Ömer Sabancı in 1950, was started to be known as the "Equestrian Mansion" due to the horse sculpture made in 1864 by the French sculptor Louis Doumas, which was placed in its garden in the same year. The second horse statue in the grounds of the mansion is the cast of one of the 1204 horses that was taken from Istanbul Sultanahmet Square, which was looted by the Crusaders during the 4th Crusade in 4, and placed in front of the Venice San Marco church.

Sakıp Sabancı, who has lived in the mansion since 1966, allocated the mansion to Sabancı University with its rich collection of calligraphy and painting in 1998 to be converted into a museum. Opened to visitors in 2002 with the addition of a modern gallery, the exhibition areas of the museum were expanded with the arrangement in 2005 and reached international standards at the technical level.

Collections

In the Ottoman Calligraphy Collection, which is exhibited on the upper floor of the Atlı Köşk and consisting of important works of Ottoman calligraphy, there are also rare handwritten Qur'an. In addition, 96 works selected from the collection, which includes continents, murakkaas, plates, hilyes, decrees, charts, and calligraphers, and calligraphy tools, were exhibited at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, Spain in 2008. The collection is on display at the Real Alcázar Palace in Seville, between April 4 and June 15, 2008.

The painting collection of the museum consists of examples of early Turkish painting and works by foreign artists such as Fausto Zonaro and Ivan Ayvazovski, who worked in Istanbul in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. Among the local artists whose works are in the collection, there are names such as Osman Hamdi Bey, Şeker Ahmed Paşa, Süleyman Seyyid, Fikret Mualla and İbrahim Çallı.

Three rooms on the ground floor of the Atlı Köşk, which was used by the Sabancı Family when they lived in the mansion, 18-19. century decorative works of art and furniture. In the garden of the museum, archaeological and stone works from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods are exhibited.
